Hand-painted wallpaper. Original colourway on Tarnished Silver gilded paper.

This design features a weeping willow tree, enveloping the viewer in delicate leafy branches, occasionally interrupted by inky trunks. A highly refined decorative sense can be seen in the tree trunk where the Rimpa technique of tara-shikomi (applying paint or ink so that it pools on wet paper), makes interesting patches to suggest the bark. The distance of the hanging branches is conveyed with subtle tonal differences; the fore-most with strongly painted leaves and the farthest ones in a paler style.
