Different types of basin taps

Tall basin mixers

If you have a countertop basin that perches on your vanity, you’ll need a tall mixer. If you want a tall basin mixer for an ordinary sink, it will look quite lofty and may result in splashing. This style of tap requires good water pressure. 

Wall mounted mixers

These have a bit of a luxe look and are great with a countertop basin. These help to keep the vanity clear, and often have a plate behind them in the same finish.

These days, there are more finishes than just chrome. It’s worth taking some time and checking out the options in order to decide what look is for you.

Chrome basin taps

Still a favourite, chrome taps are easy to clean, hard-wearing, suit a range of different styles and come in lots of different styles. They are usually the cheapest but show water spots and fingerprints easily.

Brushed nickel taps and mixers

This has a softer, more subtle finish with a semi-satin finish that doesn’t show every water droplet like chrome does. It has a golden lustre, lending a modern bathroom a look of glamour. It is more expensive than most other options available though.

Matte black basin mixers

Black finishes are becoming more and more popular as a statement piece. They look amazing with a huge range of sinks and vanity tops, such as timber, concrete, and resin. They are easy to clean, don’t show dirt or water spots easily, and look ultra-modern.

Bronze tapware

There are satin and oil-rubbed bronze finishes. They are easy to maintain and blend in beautifully with traditional bathrooms. However, they can be difficult to match unless you buy a whole set at once.

Copper basin taps

With its warm glow and lustre, copper is a luxurious addition to any bathroom. Depending on the design, they can be modern or classical in style. The metal has antibacterial properties and as copper ages, it develops a stunning patina which will look unique.

Polished brass basin mixers

This is generally the ‘gold’ looking mixers you’ll see. They are perfect for traditional looking bathrooms and can add a touch of something a bit different to modern sink ware. 

Technical basin mixer considerations

Think about your water pressure. If it’s super low, or maybe the hot and cold water pressures are unequal, then choose your mixer carefully. Speak to an expert about what brands and types of mixers will work best in your bathroom.

Also consider the size of your basin. If it’s quite small, then a large tap might result in an inadvertent shower every time you brush your teeth. 

Some mixers require one hole, some two, some three. If you are updating an existing bathroom or if the vanity you’ve chosen has pre-drilled holes, make sure you buy the tapware that fits.
