Waste disposal units are quick and efficient kitchen appliances that fit underneath kitchen sinks. They allow users to dispose of the garbage right on the spot quickly. In addition, the food waste disposers grind several food items into tiny pieces and let them flow through the sewerage system at ease.
What Are Waste Disposal Units?
They are modern and eco-friendly appliances that offer a convenient way to manage kitchen waste. They are designed following strict standards of electrical appliances like warming drawers. But, contrary to what most people think, they do not include knives or blades due to obvious safety concerns.
Easier & Faster Clean-up
Waste disposal removes garbage after cooking, much like how range hoods remove odours, heat, and smoke. With the help of garbage disposal, a small amount of leftover food in plates can be scraped and disposed of into the sink. This saves the user from carrying them over to the bin and scraping them there. It is a more accessible, efficient, and faster way to clean up after dinners.
Protect Pipes
Throwing food scraps into the sink can build up to blockage and clog the drain pipes over a certain period. But with the help of waste disposal, food debris is ground into tiny particles which are unlikely to jam in the kitchen pipes.
Cheap
The regular cost of kitchen waste disposal units is around 70 to 130 dollars. Installing it at home without the help of a plumber can save more money and hassle.
Safe And Small
Garbage disposals are safe to install within residential areas, such as community drains and septic tanks. They are small; hence, they fit into the kitchen like mini bar fridges and wine fridges.
Eco-friendly
Along with decreasing household waste, green waste disposal can also reduce the quantity of garbage in landfills. As waste is a leading global issue, a waste disposer can cause a 50% reduction in the amount of waste that goes into landfills.
It is an environmentally friendly appliance similar to eco-friendly cooktops and water filtration systems. Food waste disposers recycle the garbage and return it to the soil in the form of nutrients.
Installation
- Shut down the circuit breaker in the kitchen
- Remove the drain pipes, sink strainer, and extra putty
- Press the flange into place after applying the plumber’s putty
- Load the fibre seal under the sink with a backup flange and mounting ring
- Connect the snap ring by opening and snapping it back into place
- Tighten the bolts uniformly
- To attach the dishwasher drain, blow out the drain plug with a hammer and remove it from the disposal’s inlet
- Open the plate covering the wires and join the electrical cords with identical wire colours. Now reattach the plate
- Connect the drain by inserting the seal in the discharge channel; now fix the discharge tube with it
- Check whether the discharge pipe is aligned accurately and then attach it to the drainpipes
Care And Maintenance
Even if the garbage disposal is used correctly, some food scraps might stick inside the drain system. These bits and pieces decay and ultimately cause a terrible smell in the drain. To prevent this, the disposal should be turned off and cleaned once a week.
The proper way of cleaning the opening is to wipe the interior rubber ring of the waste disposal. Then, later on, one can use a bottle brush to clean it from the inside. Finally, to freshen it up, one can regularly place vinegar, lemon, or citrus ice cubes inside the drain.
However, septic tanks need to be regularly maintained. This is because older public sewerage systems are unable to digest food particles from kitchen waste disposers. Therefore, permission is required from the water board authority or municipal waste management to install a garbage disposer in such areas.
To prevent clogging and damage, always run cold water before using the disposal and let it run as the disposal works. Next, slowly drain small quantities of food scraps. After getting rid of debris, turn the disposal off while the water runs for another 10 seconds to flush any remaining particles down the drain into the sewerage system.
To prevent the disposal from clogging, certain foods such as oil, butter, cream, bones, rice, banana skins, and seafood shells must not be put into it. A garbage disposal unit can be used for up to 10 years if it is adequately maintained.
