About architecture+

architecture+ is an award-winning architectural practice based in Wellington, New Zealand.

Over the past 29 years architecture+ has gained a wealth of experience across many scales – gaining expertise in civic, commercial and multi-residential projects. Since its establishment in 1994, architecture+ has steadily grown to a sizable practice, led by six directors: Stuart Gardyne, Allan Wright, Stephen Poulopoulos, Belinda Tuohy, Kirsty Chamberlain and Simon Gourley.

architecture+ fosters an inclusive office culture, where our talented staff play an integral role in office and practice development. While architecture+ has a recognised design focus, we are also highly respected for our technical skills and project delivery capabilities. We have a reputation for delivering well-considered projects of consistent design quality and for our sound technical understanding of construction methods and materials.

Nominating the appropriate personnel for each project is fundamental to the successful delivery of our design services. Our methodology sees the meaningful involvement of a project director throughout a project's life, while leading a team with complementary skills and fostering a culture of collaboration. Our project teams are comprised of both long-serving loyal staff with their specialist expertise and newer graduates with fresh contemporary thinking.

People

architecture+ is committed to creating architecture that improves people’s lives – not just for its inhabitants and users but also for the wider community. We do this by creating buildings and spaces for living and working that are enjoyed by individuals and communities alike. We consider how architecture interacts with and contributes to its wider environment, such as the overall street-scape and public space. People are the first and last consideration in our designs.

Collaboration

We recognise that great ideas can have many parents, and that great architecture is created through a process of collaboration between many parties, including designers, clients and builders. We strongly believe that the most successful projects are the result of great collaboration across a broad project team. As a practice, we do not approach projects claiming to know all the answers or seeking to control the outcome. Instead, we will ask questions, listen, and share ideas in the evolution of the design, to achieve the best possible outcome.

Realisation

As a practice, we believe that a design does not become architecture until it has been realised through construction. We are committed to developing and realising our designs, meeting our clients’ budgets by adopting innovative design solutions and methodologies to maximise value. We believe that our responsibility and commitment to our clients during construction is to meet and exceed their expectations of quality management, completion time and project costs. We see this as one of architecture +'s unique strengths and are proud of our track record in successful project delivery.

Responsibility

Architecture is not just created for the initial client and occupants, but also for future users and the wider community. We believe it is our responsibility to make enriching architectural contributions to our communities, and to share our ideas and philosophies with our clients, our profession, and the wider community. We also acknowledge our responsibility to the planet and future generations through the considered integration of sustainable building technologies.
