Andrew Fedorowicz – Personal Profile

Andrew Fedorowicz registered as an Associate Architect with the then Royal Australian Institute of Architects 10 years after working as an Architectural draftsperson, studying Architecture part-time at RMIT.

Working for renowned Commercial Architects such as Yunken Freeman and Sol Sapir gave him a solid grounding in Commercial/Institutional design. He has been in private practice for over 30 years specialising in Heritage work.

Of the 40 projects he has completed in the past five years standout commissions have been:

• The Moonee Valley Tabaret
• The Business School - Victoria University
• The Arasaratnam Residence - Deepdene
• The Marelich Residence - Armadale
• The Erfurth Residence - Moonee Ponds

He is currently engaged on projects for the Ballarat City Council, the Maryborough Golf Club and several more expansive private homes.

Interior Designer – Amanda Richmond

Amanda Richmond creates elegant, liveable, stylish interiors that make a house a home. She excels in creating an integrated, pleasing interior whether for a heritage home or modern dwelling. Her award winning designs are contemporary yet sympathetic to the past style and grace of historical and period homes. With years of experience running her own building company specialising in heritage renovations, she has an in-depth appreciation of the finer points of developing an interior design that fully integrates with the heritage of a building.

Balance works closely with clients to understand their needs and to delight them with finished design that reflects their personality and style.

Amanda Richmond is a Past President and current fellow at the Design Institute of Australia through its Victorian chapter.

• Kew - Balancing the interior of Edwardian building with a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired contemporary addition.
• Deepdene - Refurbishing an Art Deco residence with contemporary finishes to complement a sympathetic renovation.
• Armadale - Transforming a 1880's conservatory & kitchen into a light filled contemporary space, while paying homage to the Queen Anne details of the original building.
• Craigieburn - Designing a new public bar area and accessories in an existing sporting complex, project managing the building team through demolition and construction. New Bar functional within a week.

Heritage Grants Available

In various municipalities Victoria-wide, Heritage Grants are available for Heritage restoration and in some cases maintenance. Balance Architecture is knowledgeable with regards to Heritage Grants and their availability. With Andrew Fedorowicz’s input, Balance Architecture is available to assist clients to apply for such grants, supply accurate heritage architectural drawings, costings and heritage knowledge and professional opinion on all matters architectural.

Renovation and Refurbishment of Heritage Buildings

Many Heritage listed properties or properties seeking heritage listing have been ravaged over time through inappropriate removal of Heritage features, partial demolitions, inappropriate renovations and additions that ultimately detract from the Heritage value of a building or property. Balance Architecture can provide a full Heritage restoration and renovation strategy that will restore buildings to their original construction status, albeit with acknowledgements to modern requirements, building regulations and liveability.

Heritage Projects

Balance Architecture has completed a number of both public and private Heritage projects.

Currently Balance Architecture is working with the City of Ballarat in the reconstruction and restoration of the original Ballarat Botanical Gardens Fernery project.

Registering for Heritage Listing – the first step

Many properties in inner Melbourne are covered by Heritage Overlays, but in themselves are not Heritage listed.

With the expansion and growth of Melbourne over the past 20 years, Heritage evaluation by Municipal Council bodies has often not kept pace with the need to declare certain buildings and precincts and facilitate Heritage listing. As an example, the modernist homes of Black Rock, Beaumaris and Sandringham were not at all protected until the process was started by Residents last year (2019). Many irreplaceable dwellings were demolished.

Private persons and organisations (both private and public) can apply for Heritage status and listing with Heritage Victoria.
