From a very early age, Jonny Collett’s dream was to become a respected Registered Master Builder. Growing up, he learned what it meant to be a craftsman and to build with pride, because when you build a home, you’re helping someone build their legacy.

When you meet with the Bellbird Construction team, you’ll notice five, well-worn wooden planks fixed to our office wall. They’re planks from the steps of a house built by Jonny Collett’s grandfather when he arrived in Canterbury in the early 1900s. Jonny is from a family of builders and tradespeople, and those planks on the wall serve as a reminder to everyone at Bellbird Construction to create quality homes that stand the test of time.

We want to sit down with you, answer your questions, and help you feel comfortable about the big decisions around building your home. What are your must-haves, your deal-breakers and your expectations? We want to understand you, your lifestyle and your motivations before we even start looking at building plans.

He leads from the front, regularly visiting his teams on site to make sure your building project is tracking at it should. Bellbird Constructions’ greatest strength is its team. At the 2017 Registered Master Builder House of the Year Awards, Bellbird Construction won Bronze in the Canterbury New Home Over $2 Million category, and Silver in the Canterbury Renovations up to $500,000. Both of these projects are examples of the team’s problem solving abilities, dedication to quality and achieving their client’s visions.

Following on from the great success at the 2017 House of the Year Awards, Bellbird Construction were privledged to win a Gold in the Canterbury New Home $700,000 - $1 Million category and a Gold in the New Home $450,000 - $550,000 at the 2018 Master Builder House of the Year Awards.

We are here for you, and want to keep you as updated and involved as your new home progresses and takes shape. We can schedule regular site meetings, progress meetings, or send you photos so you will always know what is happening on your home.

Home renovations and repairs pose more challenges than building a house from the ground up. When Bellbird Construction constructs a new home we have the plans, all our people are involved, on the same page and working together.

In order to achieve this we will:

• Ensure to the best of our ability that all materials are used and applied in an environmentally friendly manner according to manufacturers’ specifications;
• Provide all employees with appropriate training in the safe handling and application of materials;
• Dispose of all waste according to regulatory laws and regulations in a responsible manner;
• Induct all new employees in Government regulations and company procedures regarding the use and disposal of waste;
• Investigate all incidents of misuse and inappropriate disposal of waste that does not comply with statutory or company requirements, and implement preventative measures to minimise the risk of recurrence;
• Comply with all relevant environmental laws and regulations;
• Conduct an environmental programme to ensure adherence to company and regulatory requirements;
• Involve and consult employees, Government authorities, regulatory bodies and customers to identify improved waste disposal.

Everyone involved with Bellbird Construction is expected to follow our health and safety guidelines.

HEALTH AND SAFETY AUDITS

We wear our SiteSafe accreditation as a badge of honour, and WorkSafe NZ independently checks our health and safety systems. We regularly attend health and safety workshops or conferences, and those who went relay what they’ve learned to the rest of the team at the next Toolbox Talk meeting.

For Bellbird Construction to be involved in insurance rebuild and renovation projects, companies like Southern Response, IAG and Vero have to be satisfied we are taking all practical steps to look after our team’s health and safety.

As well as regular audits and spot inspections, we use the iAuditor reporting tool to process our health and safety paperwork to make sure each site is compliant and up to date

REGULAR TOOLBOX TALKS

Health and safety education is an ongoing process. The law and requirements are always being updated, and so it’s our job to stay ahead of the curb with regular health and safety training.

Toolbox Talks are a way to engage the whole Bellbird Construction team with health and safety, and educate ourselves about what’s happening on site. Builders working on each of our projects around Christchurch are expected to share updates on their progress, any challenges they have come across and the solutions they have found.

As well as bringing a set of fresh eyes to each building project, our Toolbox Talks teach everyone about their accountability, and the need to speak up about health and safety if they see something on site.

EVERYONE IS ACCOUNTABLE

As the main contractor, Bellbird Construction is responsible for the health and safety of our subcontractors. That means we take an active role in inducting new employees, temporary workers, contractors and subcontractors when they arrive on site. We also educate them on our safety procedures and policies and make them aware of their responsibility to stay safe.
