FAQs

Process:

Do you do building work such as removing/adjusting/creating walls?

We can suggest builders who can carry out structural work to do with your wardrobe, including removing existing wardrobes.

What happens if there is carpet in my room?

Shelving: We recommend that the shelving goes on top of the existing/new carpet. This will give you the best look and finish.

Doors: If you have existing carpet, it may need to be cut, and a floor packer fitted. If you are having new carpet laid, a floor packer should be put in place prior to the carpet.

I’ve ordered doors and I’ve been told I need a floor packer, what does this mean?

A floor packer is a wooden batten that is fixed to the bare floor under the bottom track. It will not be visible after the doors have been installed and the carpet has been laid.

Will you remove my existing wardrobe?

We recommend you enlist the help of a builder or handyman to carry out this work as there may be some damage to the gib and holes from existing fittings. We can arrange this service for an additional fee. Please enquire with your consultant.

I don’t have a wardrobe cavity, I need to build one into an empty room. What is the process?

You will need to have what is known as a Wardrobe Creation built by a builder. The first step is to come into our showroom to see the different ranges of doors and shelving options available, we can then give product specific instructions to your chosen builder. We are happy to suggest a builder if needed. Please refer to our Creation Design Guide for more details on the process.

New Builds:

At what point in the building process should the wardrobe be installed?

The walls must be painted and carpet laid.

At what point would you come to site to do a final measure?

Doors: door openings finished, jambs fitted.

Shelving: Gib fixed.

What depth does my wardrobe need to be?

Minimum: 600mm as measured from the back wall to the outside front edge of the door jamb. Ideally 650mm to 700mm wardrobe depth is recommended, especially for triple track doors. Please see our Walk-in or Reach-in design guides for more information on ideal wardrobe dimensions.

Product:

What materials do you use?

We only use New Zealand made melamine panels. With an extremely durable surface, they are composed of sustainably sourced, New Zealand made MDF substrate, laminated with quality melamine sheets available in a huge variety of finishes and colours. You can check out the colour ranges here, here and here.

What are the things I should consider when planning my new wardrobe?

  • Reach-in wardrobes with sliding doors: 600mm to 700mm deep wardrobe overall to ensure clothing fits inside.
  • For optimum storage and better access, maximise the height and width of the wardrobe door opening as much as possible.
  • To maximise storage in your walk-in wardrobe, discuss your plans with one of our Sales Consultants before building.

Please see our Walk-in or Reach-in Design Guides for further information.

Payment:

How do I order?

To begin the order process, after you are satisfied with the design and quote, a 50% deposit payment is required. You can pay by bank direct credit online, by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Qcard), Eftpos (at our showroom), cheque or cash. Final balance is payable on completion of installation.

Notes:

  • If Boston Wardrobes is not doing the installation, we require the final payment to be made prior to the goods leaving our warehouse.
  • If payment is made by Q card, full payment will be required at the time of order.

How do I pay directly online?

Will I receive notification of my deposit payment?

Absolutely, we will email you a receipt for your deposit along with information on what will happen next and what you need to think about in preparation for our installation.

When will the final payment be due?

The final balance owing is due as soon as the installation of your order has been completed.

Note: If Boston Wardrobes is not doing the installation, we require the final payment to be made prior to the goods leaving our warehouse.

Installation:

How long after I order will I have to wait for installation?

From the date of receipt of your deposit payment, the process typically takes between 2 to 3 weeks, depending on availability of the particular product and availability of installers. If you have a specific installation date requirement, please discuss this with your customer consultant at the time you place your order.

How much notice of my installation will you give me?

Our customer service team will normally contact you a minimum of 48 hours prior to confirm the installation date and time with you. If you have a specific installation date requirement, please discuss this with your customer consultant at the time you place your order.

Do I need to be home when you do the installation?

It is not a requirement, though it can be helpful if the installer has any questions he may need to clarify with you.

Will the installer remove old doors or shelves from the wardrobe prior to installing the new wardrobe?

Our installation charges are based on the installation of a new wardrobe, and do not include the dismantling of existing doors or shelving, nor the disposal of old doors or shelving. If you have a need for any of this type of work to be done, please discuss this with your Sales Consultant prior to placing the order.

Can I do my own installation?

Most of our products, due to the nature of custom design and manufacture, require specialised tools and skills to produce a satisfactory installation result. We are proud of the quality of our wardrobes and doors, and wish to see the best possible finish for an installed wardrobe. Please be advised that no product guarantee will apply to installations not done by a Boston authorised installer. Please see next FAQ for information about our DIY products.

Do you have any DIY products?

Yes, the Simplfit and Innova ranges, can be relatively easily installed with the use of a cordless drill/screwdriver and spirit level. Additionally, if you require a wardrobe quickly, the Simplfit product can be supplied within a very short time frame (based on using the standard Simplfit design ranges).

Terminology:

Architraves -

An architrave is a strip of timber which is fitted around the door opening to cover up the gap between the jambs and the timber studs. In modern homes the architraves are typically narrow strips of timber. In older homes such as villas and bungalows, the architraves tend to be more ornate.

Cornice or cove or scotia -

A cornice or cove is an ornamental moulding (made of wood or plaster) which is fitted along the junction of the top of the wall and the ceiling. A scotia is the same thing but is usually less ornate and can be a simple strip of timber, usually painted. The reason for their existence is to cover any possible gaps or cracks in the joint between the wall and the ceiling. Some modern houses have done away with cornices or scotias, and the join between the ceiling and wall is simply "square stopped".

Door heads -

The door head is the piece of wall that is above the top of a door opening.

Jambs or jamb liners -

A door frame opening is typically constructed using "studs" (vertical framing timber lengths placed at each side of a door opening) and a door "head" across the top of the door frame opening. A jamb or jamb liner is a wooden strip that is fixed to the studs and head.

Typically jamb liners (jambs) are made to standard widths of 90mm, 110mm, 115mm, 135mm and are usually 19mm or 30mm thick, though these sizes vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Jambs are usually supplied as a "flat jamb" or as a "grooved jamb". A grooved jamb requires no architraves as the Gib board slots directly into the grooves on the rear face of the jamb. A flat jamb requires architraves to be fitted to cover up the gap between the jamb and the stud. A flat jamb allows for a lot more adjustment to create a square door opening.

Please note all of our doors require jambs and we can only do a final measure once these have been completed by your builder.

Packer/Floor Packer -

A floor packer is a wooden batten that is fixed to the bare floor under the bottom track. It will not be visible after the doors have been installed and the carpet has been laid.

Skirting -

A skirting board is the strip of timber that runs along the base of a wall.

“Boston Wardrobes never disappoint. Right from the start with the visit by the lovely and talented Bonnie through to the installation of their very high-end quality product. Even at close inspection, there are no faults or issues. This is consistent as our last wardrobe was the same. They were even able to make sliding doors for our new cupboard laundry when others scratched their head. I highly recommend Boston for their quality products, professionalism and ease in dealing with. Thanks team!”
