About us
Clelands Timber has over 100 years of experience in the timber industry and produces a CodeMark approved Complete Weatherboard System.
The entire team at Clelands takes pride in producing a wide range of premium quality New Zealand-made products ranging from weatherboard systems, fascia, window reveals, door jambs, to laminated structural beams and posts.
Clelands believe providing a quality service is an integral component to producing quality products. Their customers often comment on the benefits of Cleland's flexible order quantities - they don’t have a minimum order quantity, if you require a single length for one project and a full pack for another, they're more than happy to accommodate.
Processing of Timber
The Machine Shop:
Two late model moulders are used to profile the timber. They have the capability of producing small moulders and also large end sections up to 310mm wide. The latest German Weinig technology is used to enable us to produce accurate profiles with quick set-up times. These two machines give us flexibility and the ability to produce custom profiles.
Treatment:
Treatment is undertaken using the Koppers Performance Chemicals Light Organic Solvent Preservative (LOSP) system, which has a 25-year guarantee against fungal and insect attacks. Flash off time is between 7 – 14 days depending on dimensions. This ensures good paint adhesion.
Costa Planer Sander:
This machine planes and has two sanding belts to provide a high-quality finish product. The sander has the ability to sand panels up to 1350mm wide.
Fingerjointer:
This machine planes and has two sanding belts to provide a high-quality finish product. The sander has the ability to sand panels up to 1350mm wide.
Packaging and Dispatch:
Products for export markets are packaged and strapped onto wooden bases for containerisation. Domestic product is held in stock and distributed overnight to most North Island destinations.
Laminating:
Our 20 section Taylor Press can produce laminated posts and edge-glued panels. The press is capable of gluing material 5400mm long x 900mm wide x 150mm thick. To complement the Taylor Press we have a rotary beam press with maximum length capability of 7200mm long and also two-floor bed presses.
All exterior products are laminated using Purbond polyurethane adhesive to ensure the structural integrity of the product.
Optimising:
This machine is used for the defecting of raw timber to maximize the value recovery of clear timber components and finger joint blocks.
The timber is scanned, measured, calculated and cut according to the predetermined specifications. All product produced is visually inspected to ensure it meets our rigid specifications.
Priming:
Two paint lines are operating an alkyd oil-based spray line and a single pass vacuum line with two vacuum coaters and two gas catalytic driers for acrylic paint application. This technology ensures total paint coverage with a controlled distribution of paint.
Weatherboard Maintenance
Here are a few tips on how to maintain your Clelands Timber weatherboards:
Things to Expect
- Cladding in north-facing or heavy weather-exposed aspects age quicker than timber located in other aspects.
- Some movement of the timber as it expands and contracts.
- Possible minor surface cracking (checking).
Minimum Maintenance
- Cladding must be cleaned regularly (minimum every 12 months) with mild detergent and a soft brush, rinse with water. Note: high-pressure water blasting is not allowed.
- A maintenance assessment is required at least every two summers as follows:
- Sand back areas of weatherboard where flaking or cracking is occurring. Putty and sand as appropriate, then spot prime and apply two coats of exterior paint as required.
- Check all weatherboards, junctions, flashings, mouldings and replace or remediate parts as required to maintain the weather tightness of the cladding system.
- Recoat the weatherboards with exterior paint as required by the coating manufacturer’s recommendations(typically between 5 to 10 years).
- Topcoat colours should not be less than 45% light reflective values. The resin may bleed from timber in hot conditions or where painted in dark colours. We do not recommend the use of dark colours, high gloss, or low sheen finishes.
