About us
As a self employed architectural designer I have been in business in Nelson for 35 years.
In that time I have designed many comfortable, modern and economical homes for clients here in Nelson as well as throughout the country. I have also undertaken design work for many commercial and industrial buildings, including retail/office buildings, education buildings and church and community facilities.
The biggest challenge is to give the client what they want within their budget expectations. This is achieved by discussing the project with them, the careful use of materials and planning the layout to make use of sun, view and location.
I operate my business from a dedicated office at home and over the years have employed staff. All work is completed on a computer using a architectural CAD programme call ArchiCAD. I am able to produce 3D pictures of the building as it will look in its surroundings. This helps the clients to fully understand what their project will look like when completed.
With the changes in legislation I keep up to date by attending seminars run by the industry and also ADNZ. Being a member also enables me to share ideas with fellow designers. I have been a member since 1988 and was given Life Membership of ADNZ in 2008. I have been a national president and local branch president as well as serving on the national executive.
Commercial
A commercial development is a major investment involving a great deal of matters for consideration. Property developers need to be sure of receiving the best information possible to ensure expedient project completion within budget. Where appropriate, consultants such as engineers and quantity surveyors are used to provide the specialist services commonly required for commercial development design. Since 1984 David Todd Ltd have been designing commercial buildings and have gained a reputation for completing the work economically and with pleasing aesthetic appeal.
Some of the larger projects ($1 - $2 million plus) have included the design and management of:
- Irvines Freightlines complex in Pascoe Street, now Wilders.
- Pak'N Save and associated upgrade of the Richmond Mall.
Other projects (of a smaller scale $300,000 - $750,000) have included:
- The refurbishment of the old Nelson City Council building next to the 1903 site at the top of Trafalgar Street.
- The retail outlets of Hurst & Taylor, Power Store (formally Retravision), Konica Minolta, Mag & Turbo Warehouse, Noel Leemings Queen Street Richmond, Ezy Kitchens Kotua Pl Stoke, Aon Nelson Office, Midas Mufflers and the 3 shops on the 155 Trafalgar Street site.
- The new premises of Nelson Packaging in Merton Place Tahunanui was a design and build project with Scott Construction Ltd.
Specialist buildings have included:
- Education buildings.
- Church complexes.
- The Motor vehicle outlets of Bowater Toyota, Bowater Honda, Mitsubishi, Havens of Nelson and MS Ford in Haven Rd.
- Abbeyfield House Mata Close, Tahuna
Renovation
A complete design service is offered for people wanting to undertake renovations or refurbishments, or repair with flair. If required, David can also administer the building contract for clients and/or provide site observation.
He has been in practice for 35 years and has enjoyed working with the newer trends for greener buildings and using improved material and products.
Residential
It’s my pleasure to turn your dreams and aspirations into the best possible working realities within your budget. After carefully surveying your site for topography and assessing available access, sunlight and views, I sit down with you and talk HOME DESIGN. Listening carefully to a description of your ideal home and working through a detailed questionnaire usually lets me get a "feel" for your particular tastes and requirements. Then by sifting and selecting priorities I strike a balance between your budget and your "brief" to produce the optimum design solution for you and your site. Finally adding a dash of flair and creativity I can complete the picture with one or more full colour perspective views (optional) - both exterior and interior are possible. Amendments can be easily accommodated after your appraisal then when all is confirmed I complete the final construction document and specifications. If required I can also administer the building contract for you and/or provide site observation.
Standard Plan / Regency Homes
Architecturally designed medium priced homes for typical New Zealand flat sites.
Regency Homes is a range of standardised house plans which were carefully designed for those wanting a lower cost quality home design service. The same care and attention that produces our custom designs goes into preparing the Regency plans.
Classic
The Classic Range of Regency Homes feature conventional construction single story medium priced homes for typical flat sites in a choice of building materials and with concrete slab floors as standard.
Contemporary
The Contemporary Range of Regency Homes feature modern “architectural” styling single storey medium priced homes for typical flat sites all clad in plaster type claddings, a choice of roof materials and with concrete slab floors as standard.
Cottage
The Cottage Range of Regency Homes feature traditional styling medium priced homes for typical flat or gently sloping sites. Claddings include weatherboard or panel type claddings with some suiting brick veneer. A choice of roof materials and timber framed floors as standard.
