AWARD-WINNING CHRISTCHURCH BUILDERS Daryl and Tara Hewitt have owned and operated D J Hewitt Builders in Christchurch for over 30 years.
The company builds architecturally-designed new homes, rebuilds, large extensions and alterations particularly in the hill suburbs or work with your designer/architect on your plans.
We have a saying – ‘Start with Us’. By that we mean seeking our advice as builders even before you have chosen a site, certainly before any plans are drawn. We offer a full service to manage all plans, interiors, lighting plans, engineering, council consents, budgets and pricing, ready to start your build on time.

D.J. Hewitt Builders Ltd is an award-winning Christchurch building company formed 30 years ago by Daryl and Tara Hewitt. Daryl remains 100% passionate about building and is personally involved in most jobs to ensure that the company’s clients receive only the highest quality work.

The company has introduced a range of D.J. Hewitt Builders clothing for its team, which reflects its distinctive brand colours. You may also see our vans in Christchurch, featuring our name and logo. (Look out for that sharp paint job!)

2009
HOUSE OF THE YEAR
The Wilson House won the gold award in the over $1m category and best overall bathroom, and was also awarded Gold Reserve which means it went on to the National awards.

At this year's 2008 Canterbury House of the Year Awards, we were awarded 1 Gold award and 2 Silver awards.

At the 2007 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards we were awarded 4 Gold awards for our 4 homes entered, a 100% Gold record!

2006
In 2006 we won 12 awards, notably the Chambers house, which won a total of six awards, including:
- Gold Award as category winner, New Homes $600,000 – $1 million
- National Gold Reserve.
The Ahn house in Bishopdale was a Gold Reserve National Finalist Award in the category New Homes $450,000 – $600,000.
The O’Neil Home won Gold at the 2006 Canterbury House of the Year.
The Cook Home won a Gold Award at the 2006 Canterbury House of the Year.
The Hargen Home won Silver at the 2006 Canterbury House of the Year.

CHRISTCHURCH DESIGN AND BUILDING GUIDE
The basics of the building process are budget, wish list and time frame. Get these basics right and you can enjoy the whole building process. We can help you from choosing a site to moving in! We can hold your hand, or even go on holiday and come back to your completed home!
All the homes we build in Christchurch are built in accordance to each client’s requirements. Every home is unique and built to the highest standards of craftsmanship. We continue to design and build a wide range of homes throughout Christchurch, whether on the flat or on the hill.
STAGE 1: PLANNING & BUDGETING
The first stage for planning a build is for us to have an initial discussion about your requirements. We can then decide on the style and scale of your house and the materials needed for it, in order to work out a budget. Your wish list is useful. (Make a scrapbook of photos and homes that you like as this will help identify your personal style)
STAGE 2: THE DESIGN
Next, you need to engage a designer. We will work with you to find a designer who can help you make your dream a reality. (You may now want to engage any specialists who’ll be able to help with the process.) We then work through the design process with you and give feedback on the drawings. We’ll explain how permits work and give you a timeframe on the design, the permits and on the actual building process.
STAGE 3: INTERIOR DECORATING
D.J. Hewitt Builders now offers an Interior Coordinating Service. Tara Hewitt can help you style your whole home interior. She can bring all the experts together for a stunning interior including: lighting, kitchen, bathroom, colour design, carpet, tiles & window treatments etc. D.J. Hewitt Builders won the Interior Design & Finish Award in Canterbury 2005 and ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards – Interior Design Award in 2015 with O’Neil Architecture.
STAGE 4: PRICING
Once working drawings for your house are available, we can deliver a fully itemised working price from which it is easy to work out where costs are allocated. We can then give you options for different materials and additional features.
STAGE 5: THE BUILD
The team at D.J.Hewitt Builders work closely with you and our sub-trades through out the building process to achieve an end result, which is both on time and within budget.
