Resurfacing an existing concrete surface is usually more cost-effective than replacing it with new concrete. As a guide allow $45-$75 per square metre, but this can still vary depending on the preparation required and the style/design that is chosen. What should l do if bubbles appear on the surface when l am applying the coloured sealer?

If you see small bubbles appear the sealer may have been applied too thick, backroll the area with a dry roller.

Can I use Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer on concrete pavers?

As long as the pavers are a porous concrete paver and have no existing coatings applied, you can use Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer on them. The pavers need to be prepared the same way as for larger concrete surfaces. Care needs to be taken to ensure the pavers are completely sealed to prevent any blooming of the sealer occurring from moisture within the substrate.

Can I add more Dulux Avista Colour Tint to my Dulux Avista Coloured Sealer to mark it darker?

Adding additional Dulux Avista Colour Tint to the Dulux Avista Tintable Base Sealer will not further darken the sealer and may affect the performance of the sealer, so we advise against doing this.

Can I use Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer to seal my concrete benchtop?

Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer is not suitable for sealing a concrete kitchen benchtop, as Dulux Avista sealers aren't classed as food grade products.

Can I use Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer on natural stone pavers?

No, Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer is designed to be applied over a concrete substrate and is not suitable for use on natural stone.

How much oxide do I need to mix in with a premixed bag of sand and cement or concrete mix to achieve my desired colour?

The strongest colour is achieved by adding 80 grams of oxide for every 1 kilo of cement present in the concrete mix. As a rough guide, add 300 grams of oxide per 20-kilo bag of concrete mix or 30 kilos per cubic metre of concrete mix.

Can you use Dulux Avista Resurfacing over an existing exposed aggregate driveway?

Yes, Dulux Avista Resurfacing can be used over exposed aggregate. Multiple base coat applications may however be required to completely cover the existing exposed aggregate finish surface prior to application of the decorative resurfacing finish coat.

Can I use Dulux Avista Epoxy outside?

The Dulux Avista Epoxy is not suitable for exterior use, as it isn't UV stable, so will yellow with exposure to UV light from the sun. This product is for internal application only.

Can you acid etch new coloured concrete?

New concrete needs to be acid washed prior to the application of Dulux Avista Concrete Sealers. The concrete needs to be a minimum of 14 days old prior to any acid washing or pressure cleaning.

How long do I have to leave my newly sealed driveway before I can park my car on it?

It’s best to leave your newly sealed driveway as long as possible when it comes to driving over or parking on it. If you park a car with warm tyres on a freshly sealed driveway the heat and pressure from the tyres can potentially lift the sealer resin from the driveway surface, or in some circumstances leave tyre residue on the surface. Our recommendation is that you should leave your driveway for at least 5 days before parking on it.

I have sealed my driveway and now it has become to slippery to walk on; how can I fix this?

Dulux Avista Slip Reducing Additive Powder and Dulux Avista Slip Reducing Additive Crushed Glass can be added to concrete sealer to improve slip resistance. In this instance you can apply an additional coat of sealer to your driveway, incorporating one of these Slip Reducing Additives.

What size nap roller should I use to apply concrete sealer?

For best results, concrete sealer should be poured into a roller tray and applied using a good quality 12-20mm nap roller. Apply the sealer evenly doing 1 square metre at a time.

How long do I have to leave my freshly laid concrete driveway before sealing it?

A newly laid concrete surface must be left for a minimum of 14 days to allow the concrete to fully cure before sealing. Refer to the Dulux Avista Sealing Guide for details.

Can I add the Dulux Avista Colour Tint to a water based sealer?

No, you must use Dulux Avista Waterbased Colour Tint with a water based sealer.

Can I add solvent to concrete sealer?

No, solvent cannot be added to Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer. Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer is designed to be used as it is supplied, adding solvent may affect the performance of the sealer.

Can I use Dulux Avista Concrete Sealers over an existing painted concrete surface?

Dulux Avista Concrete Sealers cannot be applied over a painted surface, as the sealer won't penetrate the existing coating and adhere to the substrate. An existing paint coating needs to be completely removed prior to a concrete sealer being used.

What type of finishes are available in coloured concrete?

Your coloured concrete can be finished in a variety of methods to create the look you want. Some of the popular finishes include Broomed, Coved, Exposed Aggregate, Stamped and Trowelled.

How long does resurfacing take?

It will normally take 2 days to resurface and seal an average size driveway.

Can l resurface a new concrete slab?

Yes, as long as it has cured for at least 28 days.

Can l reseal if there is flaking/peeling sealer on the surface?

No you can’t reseal this surface. The sealer will need to be completely stripped from the surface which should be done by a professional contractor.

What is the coverage rate of sealer?

Normal coverage for a first coat is approx 3-5m² per litre depending on the porosity of the concrete. Subsequent coats should deliver 5-6m² per litre of sealer.

How long will the sealer take to cure?

Curing times will depend on the ambient conditions and can vary from job to job. However, it is recommended that the sealed surface does not have foot traffic for at least 24 hours and vehicle traffic for at least 5 days.

What affects the life expectancy of a sealer?

The type and frequency of traffic, along with the weather conditions all play a part in how long the sealer may last. Traffic over excess dirt, friction (e.g. from tyres), and other excessive wear and tear (e.g., power steering or heavy traffic) may reduce the life of the sealer. Constant UV exposure may also reduce the life of the sealer. Regular maintenance can help extend the life of the sealer.

How do l know when my driveway or pavement needs to be resealed?

If your driveway or pavement appears faded and dull but darkens when wet, it is time to reseal. Generally, surfaces need to resealed every 2 years.

Should I seal my concrete? (in regards to coloured concrete)

After using a Colour Through Oxide you still need to seal your driveway with a sealer every 2 years. By using a sealer it ensures that the colour remains true and increases the longevity of the concrete as it prevents dirt ingress.

How long does it take for coloured concrete to fade?

Without sealing, coloured concrete will only take about a month to fade to almost 10-15 shades lighter than the original colour due to the natural curing process of concrete. As such, it is strongly recommended that you reseal your driveway every 2 years to enhance colour integrity.

Is there a difference between coloured concrete stain and coloured sealer?

Yes. Colour stain is penetrating and gives the concrete surface a translucent colour without a film building. Sealer forms a film over the top of the concrete, much like paint. It is strongly recommended that if you choose a concrete stain that you use a clear sealer over the top every 2 years as well, to ensure the longevity of the concrete.

Yes, on HardieDeck ™ installations Dulux Avista’s Tintable Semi-Gloss and General Purpose Matt Concrete Sealer is recommended for optimum performance of your deck, after priming the surface with Avista Pre-Sealer.

Do I need to prime my HardieDeck™ before sealing?

Yes, in this instance, Dulux Avista Concrete Sealer Pre-Sealer should be used. We recommend priming the HardieDeck ™ with one coat of the Pre-Sealer and ensuring that the primer is not applied to thickly. By priming the HardieDeck ™ it ensures that the Dulux Avista Sealer has something to bond to. This can be very important in locations where the HardieDeck ™ is likely to be subject to standing water (pool surrounds, uncovered decks, balcony or patio areas), or subject to high impact and scuffing (eg. Areas where tables and chairs are used). Dulux Avista Slip Reducing Additive can be added to the coating to provide slip resistance.
