Encompass Design

About

A landscape architect shouldn’t have a rigid “style” but rather be able to create informal or formal garden designs using native and exotic species or a rich mix of both.

They should work with client’s budgets and make informed decisions about materials and any other aspects of the design to ensure that the best outcome is achieved.

Mark Lockhart is an advocate for the environment and values the importance of good design.

His plant knowledge and experience in planting design for a range of sites is integral to his design approach.

While all aspects of planting design are catered for, Encompass design specialises in low maintenance gardens and landscape design that has an informal but structured aesthetic. This requires a comprehensive knowledge of not only plant species but how they develop over time.

This is a different approach to the traditional planting design and relies less on irrigation and/or constant maintenance. This is vital for commercial projects and Kāinga Ora housing projects.

Since 2013, Mark has assisted us with removing the existing canopy of pine trees and revegetating coastal species on a steep cliff face Waiheke Island. This has required working with and co-ordinating arborists, ecologists to prepare the site, manage it for weeds and replant with appropriate native coastal species.

The site has been transformed from a barren and hostile environment to a vigorous and healthy beautiful early bush area on the higher ground and an ongoing retaining and revegetation program on the steeper and lower areas close to the sea. We had seen the  great work Mark has done on Rakino and his input and vast experience is now showing real rewards for us . Coastal erosion and weed eradication is only part of our challenge. Lack of any good soil .Intense heat on an over sheltered site ,  dangerous access and a wide range of noxious weeds and predators to boot. Mark is very professional, knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. He is a specialist in this work and we are looking forward to continuing working with him as we progress on with our project

Mark Lockhart designed the landscaping and installed most of it for our Parnell property. Having inherited  large amounts of invasive bamboo when we purchased, we needed a complete make over for the whole site that was sympathetic to our property being situated among established native trees and with a group of 80 year old pohutukawa trees in our property, was lawn mowing free and would allow us to lock and leave without worry when we wanted.  We love the predominantly native plantings and extensive use of Corten edgings and Riverstone pebble paths.
