First Light Studio is an award-winning New Zealand architecture and interiors practice creating thoughtful homes that enrich the lives of the people who live in them.

We believe the best homes are more than beautiful buildings. They should reflect the people who live in them, respond naturally to their environment and become more meaningful with time. Our architects and designers bring together creativity, technical expertise and a genuine curiosity about how people live. Every project begins with listening, understanding the people behind the brief and exploring the unique opportunities of each site before a single line is drawn.

From coastal retreats and alpine homes to transformative renovations and contemporary new builds, we create architecture that balances beauty, craftsmanship and performance. While we are best known for bespoke residential architecture, our experience extends across multi-unit housing, master planning and larger community projects, bringing a broader perspective and practical experience to every home we design.

Since our inception in 2012, our work has been recognised with more than 20 NZIA Architecture Awards, but our greatest satisfaction comes from seeing our clients build their lives in the homes we’ve helped create.

Our Approach

Every home begins with a conversation.

Great architecture starts by understanding how you want to live, rather than simply what you want to build. We listen carefully, explore ideas together and challenge assumptions before refining a design that is uniquely yours.

Our architects and designers work collaboratively throughout the process, balancing beauty, craftsmanship, performance and sustainability to create homes that are deeply connected to their landscape and a genuine reflection of the people who live in them.

We believe the best projects are those where the journey is just as rewarding as the outcome. By building strong relationships with our clients, consultants and builders, we create a collaborative design process that is enjoyable, transparent and ultimately delivers better homes.

Services & Expertise

Residential Architecture

Whether you’re building a new home, transforming an existing one or creating a family retreat, we provide a complete architectural service from the earliest ideas through to construction.

Healthy, High-Performance Homes

Beautiful homes should also be comfortable, healthy and efficient. We carefully consider orientation, materials, thermal performance and sustainability to create homes that perform as beautifully as they look.

Interior Design

We believe architecture doesn’t stop at the front door. Our interior design is developed alongside the architecture to create homes that feel cohesive, timeless and uniquely personal.

Site Planning & Feasibility

Every exceptional home begins with understanding its site. We help clients unlock the full potential of their land through careful planning, feasibility and thoughtful design thinking.

Modern Construction

Innovation has always been part of First Light’s story. We embrace modern methods of construction, prefabrication and emerging technologies where they improve quality, efficiency and project outcomes.

Te Ao Māori

We have a deep respect for Te Ao Māori and enjoy working alongside iwi, hapū and communities to create authentic design responses that celebrate culture, identity and place.

Visualisation & Design Communication

The design journey should be inspiring and easy to understand. Through sketches, photorealistic renders, animations and immersive digital tools, we help clients confidently experience their future home long before construction begins.
