Child Safety

Safety should be a key consideration when selecting a garage door or opener, as a garage door will be the largest moving item in your house and failures can cause serious injury. Garage doors can vary dramatically in the safety features they include.

Garador believes the safety of your family and possessions is of the utmost importance, so we incorporate some of the most advanced safety features into our garage doors and openers, including:

Accessories to make your garage door safer for your family

As an optional extra, safety infra-red beams can be fitted to openers, so the garage door will automatically stop and reverse, if the beam is broken whilst the garage door is closing. This means if a child, or pet, runs under the garage door while it is closing – as happens so often – the garage door will stop and reverse, without making contact with the child/pet. Garador recommends the use of safety infra-red beams on all automatic garage doors.

Are you worried about giving the kids a key to the house or a garage door opener transmitter? There’s nothing worse than one of these being lost at school! Install a Garador entry keypad to your automatic garage door. This allows entry to the garage without a remote control transmitter. It's great for children, as they can enter the house with their pin number. It's also ideal if you go out for a run, or to walk the dog, as there's no need to carry a set of keys.

Car Safety

Safety should be a key consideration when selecting an automatic garage door, as a garage door will be the largest moving item in your house. Garage Doors can vary dramatically in the safety features they include.

Garador believes the safety of your family and possessions is of the utmost importance. Because cars and other vehicles are used constantly with garage doors, we incorporate some of the most advanced features into our garage door openers to help protect them, including:

On the Garador GDO range:

An automatic reverse function so if the garage door comes into contact with an obstruction on its downward journey it goes back up, or if it comes into contact with an obstruction on its upward journey it automatically stops;

Other accessories to make your garage door safer:

As an optional extra, safety infra-red beams can be fitted to our garage door openers, so the garage door will automatically stop and reverse, if the beam is broken whilst the door is closing. This means if a child, pet or vehicle, goes under the garage door while it is closing, the door will stop and reverse, without making contact with the child/pet/vehicle. Garador recommend the use of safety infra-red beams on all automatic garage doors.

Door Care & Maintenance

All metal garage doors are like cars, the more you maintain and clean your car, the longer it will last. Some areas of the garage door panel that seldom receive the benefits of rain washing are prone to a build-up of contaminants which can lead to corrosion of the material. To avoid this, wash regularly three to four times per year with clean water and a soft bristle brush, more often if you are located close to the sea or geothermal areas. The parts of your garage door to pay particular attention to include the curtain face adjacent to the door head and inside over the top of a roller door. So when you clean your car, clean your Garador garage door too. Timber finishes should be cleaned and maintained according to the timber finish manufacturer’s recommendations. For any service or maintenance enquiries, please contact your local Garador dealer.

Guide to Buying a Door

Looking for a new garage door? It pays to do your homework

Buying a garage door is not a decision to be taken lightly. As probably the largest moving part in your house, it’s important to choose the right garage door in line with your household’s requirements. If you’re looking at replacing an old door or adding the finishing touches to your new build, here’s our guide to making sure you get the garage door you need.

A new range of garage doors

Through innovation, technology and design, garage doors have changed over the last decade. Where once your choice was limited to a tilt door, there are now a variety of garage door options to choose from, including rolling doors and steel sectional doors. There are also numerous colours, finishes, styles and optional extras that you can specify.

When selecting your garage door you should consider your immediate needs. For example, you may have children or pets, so safety should be front of mind. Automated doors these days have photoelectric safety devices that will stop the closing door and reverse it to the open position if an invisible light beam is broken by your car or - worse - by a child.

Here’s our list of considerations:

  • Where you live – what atmospheric conditions do you have in your locality, are you near the sea, is your property exposed to harsh elements such as high winds? This could help determine what sort of finish you have on your garage door.
  • Kerbside appeal – if you plan to replace an existing door or put in a garage door to your new build, you should look at keeping this in the style of the property. It’s worth remembering that you might not be living in this house forever, so take a look at the property from the perspective of a buyer.
  • Will you want to customise your garage door with windows or panels? You should determine at an early stage whether your choice of a door will allow for optional extras.
  • When it comes to door openers will you need the latest technology to access your garage via your smartphone or do you need a keypad so other family members can get into the house through the garage?
  • How often will the garage door be in use? This could dictate the type of springs that should be specified.
  • Think about what will be kept in your garage. Will it be an extension of your home and effectively be used as an extra room? If so, you might want to think about insulating the door.
  • Do you need someone to remove your old garage door? Not all garage door companies will offer this service.

Frequently Asked Questions

General:

Q. How do I arrange a measure and quote for my house?
A. It''s simple, just use our Dealer locator and contact your local Garador dealer directly. Find one today.

Q. Should I use a professional installer?
A. At Garador, we firmly believe that the installation of a garage door is not a do-it-yourself job. A garage door is the largest moving object in your home and because of a large number of small parts, its installation is highly technical. Connecting the springs can be particularly dangerous and proper installation is critical to the performance of your door. One of the other services a professional installer can provide is the disposal of your old door if you are replacing a door.

Professional installers can typically install a door in a few hours and are careful to make sure safety requirements are met. Installations by most homeowners typically span several days and cause much frustration. In addition, incorrect installation can void certain warranties, so we recommend a professional handle the job for you.

Q. I want to replace my garage door, but don't know how to dispose of my old one. Will my Garador dealer take care of that?
A. Most dealers will haul your old door away after the new door is installed for a small additional fee. Discuss this with the salesperson when you get the estimate for your new door.

Q. Are all door sizes available?
A. Yes. Garador makes residential doors in widths beginning at 2000mm up to 6600mm. We can make any width in between, in five-millimetre increments. Please note not all models are available in all sizes.

Q. Do I need a lock on my garage door?
A. If an electric garage door opener has been installed on your door, it may not be necessary to have a lock. Newer electric openers function as the lock, making it unlikely that an intruder would be able to lift your door from the outside. If you have an older opener, check to see if your door can be lifted from the outside. We do not recommend that you install a lock with an opener because someone may accidentally try to automatically open the door when it is physically locked, possibly causing damage.

You should consider a lock if you do not intend to have an automatic opener.

Safety & Maintenance

Q. What type of care and maintenance is required for my Garador door?

A. As an important precautionary measure, you should deactivate your electric garage door opener every three (3) months by unplugging it. Operate the door manually in order to determine how easy it is to open. Remember that an electric garage door opener is only meant to work as a substitute for human strength. You must, therefore, avoid placing any unnecessary strain on it. If the door is hard to open when operated manually, get in touch with you local Garador dealer. This sort of problem may result from a decompressed spring, a warped track, or a loose cable. If so equipped, it is a good idea to check the photoelectric protection system as well to make sure it is working properly. Click here to view our comprehensive door maintenance instructions.

Q. Where can I buy garage door spare parts?
A. Your local Garador dealer carries a wide variety of garage door parts.

Insulation:

Q. Should I insulate my garage door?
A. A large amount of publicity around the ENERGYWISE™ funding to install insulation and/or heating in homes and continuing weather extremes has made insulation a front-of-mind topic for many homeowners. You may be wondering about the benefits of insulating your garage door.

There are definitely positive results to be had, but they will vary depending on your particular situation – let us explain:

Existing Homes

Existing homes will tend to have existing garage doors – no surprises there, but the type of door may impact how you go about insulating your garage.

If you have an old tilt door you may not have enough room to be able to replace it with an insulated sectional door, but you could fit one of our new Flex-A-Door’s which at the very least will cut down on the drafts which are inherent with tilting doors.

Again, replacing an old roller door with an insulated sectional door may not be feasible if the room is restricted, but a Flex-A-Door will go a long way to making your garage space useable.

Your local Garador dealer will be more than happy to come round and provide a FREE no-obligation assessment of your situation.

Having an existing sectional door can make the process of insulating your garage far simpler and give you two options to consider; work with the door you have or upgrade it completely.

Working with your existing door, you could look at adding after-market insulation to the back of it. This will generally give results but a word of warning, the additional weight of the insulation will mean your door will require new springs to operate correctly. As a result, the newly insulated door will need to be weighed and new springs ordered to suit. This is best left to your local Garador dealer as replacing and adjusting springs on any garage door can be extremely dangerous, especially to those who have not been trained in the correct procedure.

Note: An automated door may appear to continue to operate correctly, however, the life of the opener will be severely reduced due to the additional strain it will now be under and the safety reverse systems may fail to work as expected.

If you choose to take this option, make sure you know the entire cost up front and please make sure the work is carried out by a professional – find your local Garador dealer here.

Choosing to replace your sectional door gives you the same options as a new home, so read on.

New Homes

When designing your new home there is plenty to think about when trying to create an energy efficient one. But that doesn’t mean that you should gloss over your garage door as it is probably one of the largest openings in your home and most prone to heat transfer.

Double glazed windows are now a standard requirement as they are far more efficient at reducing heat transfer by creating a thermal break between the two sheets of glass. So it is easy to see that single and double glazed windows are at the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to their insulating qualities because of this thermal break.
