Our purpose is to design the world’s best places – places people love.

Globalisation, climate change, urbanisation, and digitisation present new opportunities and challenges for how we live.

In this fast-changing context, we bring together the best designers and thinkers in a unique collaborative process that results in both beautiful design and measurable value.

We work across architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and urban design - a rich multi-disciplinary mix of skills and perspectives that unlocks the economic, social and cultural value of projects.

We combine our creative design expertise with capabilities in strategy, research, technology and experience design, and we regularly collaborate with experts and partners from further afield.

Through our work, we’re trying to build a more inclusive, sustainable future for communities - and create a more socially and ecologically resilient world.

Our clients look to us for more than our design skills. They want us to help them unlock value for their business and their end users – and find ways to better connect people.

Sustainability

Sustainability

Climate and biodiversity emergencies are global challenges that demand strong, evolving responses.

As designers, we are uniquely placed to mitigate climate impacts through the decisions we make on projects every day.

In 2019 Hassell joined a group of leading design practices in Australia and the UK to declare a climate and biodiversity emergency and pledged to respond with action.

We’ve designed over 2,900,000 square metres of buildings certified or registered as sustainable through rating tools including LEED, Green Mark, Green Star, WELL and BREEAM.

As an active member of international industry bodies – such as the Green Building Council of Australia, the China Green Building Council Foreign Membership Scheme and the US Green Building Council – we constantly update and expand our sustainable design capabilities.

100+ sustainability rated projects – a number that’s growing exponentially

Communities

Communities

We care about creating lasting value for our clients, but we’re just as passionate about creating lasting value for communities. We want to do work that matters to us – and to the wider world.

It’s about really listening to the perspectives of the people surrounding our projects – like Resilient South City in San Francisco, where local residents and community groups helped us map out a more sustainable future for their city.

It’s about giving back in the countries where we operate, through pro-bono projects such as the Maningrida Arts & Culture Precinct in Australia’s Northern Territory.

And it’s about contributing to grassroots efforts to expand minds and opportunities through design, by supporting programs such as the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust Building Futures in the UK and global initiatives like Humanitarian Architecture Week.

“All of our professional lives we need to think about how we can add value and meaning for the future.”

Diversity in Design

Diversity in Design

We believe great design is for everyone. The places we create, the ideas we explore and the industry we love should reflect the many diverse voices we encounter in our work every day.

We promote gender balance in our practice and across the field through initiatives such as our own Women in Design program and platforms like Parlour.

We have engaged Monash University’s XYX Lab in Australia to ensure the places we design are inclusive, safe and equitable for all genders.

And we foster next-gen designers from varied cultures and backgrounds through partnerships with groups like CareerTrackers, a non-profit that oversees the paid internships we offer to Indigenous Australian university students.

“It’s to everybody’s benefit to see more diversity in the workforce.”

History

Histrory

Over 80+ years we’ve worked on projects of every scale and type, from iconic public buildings to entire city precincts – and everything in between.

Back in 1938, Hassell was founded in Australia by a small group of architects with a big vision. Today, we’re a multi-disciplinary design practice with a talented team working together around the world.

There have been many highlights along the way. More than anything, we’re proud of the many exceptional places we’ve created with clients and collaborators over the decades. That body of work and accumulated experience are the foundations for our practice today - and tomorrow.
