Jones Nicholson (JN) is a full service, a multi-disciplinary engineering firm.

We’ve been proudly serving the construction industry in NSW and Queensland for over 50 years.

At JN, we don't stop at safe, economical and environmentally-sound engineering. We maximise the potential of every project.
We consider every angle, every factor – be it human or environmental. And then we engineer a solution that’s everything it needs to be and more.

The best part? This is just the start of what we call Responsive Engineering.

Our Story

The JN story began over 50 years ago

Trevor Punnett established T.C. Punnett & Associates out of his small home office in Sydney’s South. After 20 years, the company evolved into Jones Nicholson, a multi-disciplinary engineering firm with a reputation for practicality and cost-effectiveness.

Fast forward another 30 years and we’ve grown exponentially in terms of capability and experience. We’re working with public and private sector clients in a variety of industries, and we’ve expanded from our base in Sydney into various regional centres in NSW and most recently into Queensland.

Today JN operates with a team of 80 staff working out of 9 offices in NSW and Queensland.

Who We Are

As engineers, we’re optimists at heart. We believe places and spaces can be made better through creative design and engineering. And we know that even the most complex challenges can be overcome. JN is where your ideas come to life.

Let’s expand the vision, resolve the challenges, and make it happen.

Our Ethos
At JN, we’ve embraced the ethos of Responsive Engineering.

When we work with you, you’ll witness this in an engineering sense and in the manner in which we engage with you.

To us, being responsive means being ready to go, ready to listen and ready to think deeply about what it is our clients really need.

It also means being ready to deliver - with the right people, processes and technology all in one place. It’s these pillars of behaviour and this approach to our work that truly sets JN apart.

Our Values

Our values are at the heart of our culture and our brand.
The way we work with clients and each other flows from here – the things we see as being fundamental to great work and great service.

Adding Extra Value Through Service
Going beyond the norm of expectations to surprise and delight clients, colleagues and industry associates.

Striving for Excellence
Aiming to produce outstanding quality work; surpassing ordinary expectations.

Thinking Ahead
Thinking about what clients are going to need or want before they ask for it. Future-proofing projects.

Teamwork
Working together towards a common goal. Collaborative effort.

Owning It
Taking ownership or responsibility for delivering on commitments.

Civil Engineering

JN has always maintained a strong team of civil engineers who are well-versed in maximising the potential of a project.

Their work calls for each to be an investigator, a creative problem solver, a designer and a manager. And their progressive and collaborative approach ensures every project meets both practical and aesthetic requirements.

We’ve proven our ability to work with all building materials and any type of structure by applying our knowledge to:

  • Residential and industrial subdivisions
  • Infrastructure appraisal, reporting, costing and management strategies
  • Bridges and earth retaining systems
  • Bulk earthworks modelling and quantity calculations
  • Road and pavement designs for all road classifications
  • Carparks, driveways, ramps and road frontages
  • Stormwater drainage, On Site Detention, retention and reuse systems
  • Flood studies and impact assessments
  • Water and sewer reticulation systems
  • Erosion and Sediment Control Plans
  • Water Sensitive Urban Design
  • MUSIC modelling for stormwater quality control
  • Construction phase supervision

Structural Engineering

Our structural team is comprised of multi-talented engineers who are able to see the big project picture as well as the smaller details that matter in their own discipline.

Their work calls for each to be an investigator, a creative problem solver, a designer and a manager. And their progressive and collaborative approach ensures every project meets both practical and aesthetic requirements.

We’ve proven our ability to work with all building materials and any type of structure by applying our knowledge to:

  • Medium and high-rise buildings
  • Prestige single dwellings and townhouse developments
  • Industrial facilities
  • Retail complexes
  • University buildings, schools and childcare facilities
  • Sporting facilities and auditoriums
  • Health and aged care facilities
  • Bridges and culverts
  • Modular construction
  • Relocatable structures
  • Special construction platforms and temporary structures
  • Loading assessments on existing building structures

Electrical Engineering

Our electrical engineers pride themselves on knowing what’s going on behind the scenes, beyond what the rest of us can see. Their designs are not only completed to the required standards and regulations, they’re executed with artistry to ensure visual appeal.

Lighting design is perhaps where our creative capabilities are most apparent. We’ve gained extensive experience creating beautiful outcomes for retail and residential developments, as well as pubs, hotels and commercial offices.

We also work in external lighting design, including floodlighting and lighting for roadways, parkways, skate parks, facades, car parks and recreational areas. Our electrical expertise, however, goes far beyond lighting.

We specialise in:

  • Internal and external lighting design
  • Power distribution
  • Standby power systems
  • Communications
  • Security systems

Mechanical Engineering

Our mechanical engineers are trusted by some of Australia’s most prestigious organisations. We believe this comes down to our attitude and approach.

We understand that just as safety, functionality and efficiency can’t be compromised in today’s engineering projects, neither can aesthetics or comfort. This is why our mechanical engineers never work in isolation.

Acknowledging that mechanical services equipment and ductwork can have a huge impact on spaces, we work collaboratively with clients and architects to ensure the cost-effective and reliable solution we’ve engineered doesn’t mar the architectural intent.

By joining forces with our Sustainability team, we also make sure we’re doing all we can to reduce the ongoing costs and environmental impact of the mechanical systems we’re dealing with.

Our services include:

  • Air conditioning
  • The chilled and heated water
  • Condenser water/cooling towers
  • DX
  • VRV/VRF
  • Air handling systems
  • Heating
  • Mechanical Ventilation
  • Natural Ventilation
  • Mixed mode ventilation
  • Energy recovery

Hydraulic Engineering

Our hydraulic engineers have worked on a broad range of projects - from exclusive private residences to large multi-storey residential complexes, commercial buildings and community developments.

We keep all of the niche areas of hydraulics design under one roof, which ensures coordination with other building services disciplines as well as the civil and structural elements required. This multi-pronged approach streamlines project delivery, resulting in valuable savings for our clients.

We design:

  • Sewer, grease and trade waste drainage
  • Blackwater and greywater treatment and reuse systems
  • Sanitary, grease and trade waste plumbing
  • Hot and cold water generation and piping systems
  • Natural and LP gas systems
  • Roof gutter and downpipe systems
  • Rain water reuse systems

Fire Engineering

Our accredited fire services engineers work to keep people and property safe from fire. Regardless of project size or sector, we give our clients compliant designs that coordinate well with building features and restrictions.

Each of our engineers maintains accreditation with the Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia), and as a team, JN can look after all aspects of designing fire systems including:

  • Fire sprinklers
  • Fire hydrants and hose reels
  • Gas suppression systems
  • Smoke detection and warning systems

Sustainable Engineering

JN is committed to being part of a more sustainable future, which is why for many years we’ve had a strong focus on sustainable design.

Our work not only helps improve sustainability performance, but also reduces ongoing costs, helps build reputations and, hopefully, inspires others.

The experts in our sustainable design team are integrated were needed across disciplines to provide ESD solutions for all of our clients. They can be called upon to help create environmentally responsible buildings in new constructions, renovations or building upgrades.

We add value by:

  • identifying issues early in the design process
  • improving energy performance
  • reducing ongoing energy costs
  • helping our clients comply with statutory requirements

Our accredited assessors are able to provide energy auditing and advice regarding the key rating tools, including:

  • BASIX
  • Green Star
  • NCC Section J
  • JV3
  • NABERS
  • BEEC
