About us
Welcome to Juken New Zealand Ltd (“JNL”).
We are a New Zealand (“NZ”) based and registered company with a growing global outreach. We have been heavily involved with the NZ forestry and wood-processing industries for the past 30 years – manufacturing advanced and innovative wood products from selectively planted, managed and harvested Radiata Pine for local and export markets. In that time we have become important economic and cultural contributors to the local communities within which we operate.
In an age where wood is becoming increasingly recognised and re-established as a product of choice for many structural and non-structural applications, we can offer you high quality, fit-for-purpose products to meet your needs.
We have sustainably managed and certified plantation forests in the East Coast and Wairarapa regions of NZ’s North Island. In Wairarapa we have one and in Kaitaia, we have two, efficient and environmentally clean wood processing mills. We employ nearly 460 people and obtain goods and services from several hundred suppliers.
Research and development are important to us, and we also benefit from the technology and resources of our Japan-based parent company WoodOne Ltd, a major international housing materials and componentry company, which has invested over $NZ700 million into our Company and NZ.
All of which means that in an age where wood is becoming increasingly recognised and re-established as a product of choice for many structural and non-structural applications we can offer you high quality, fit-for-purpose products to meet your needs.
WHAT WE DO
We make a wide range of engineered wood Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), Panels and Solid Wood Products – for structural and non-structural purposes, for external or internal uses, and for appearance or non-appearance finishes.
All of it come from certified forestry we care for and harvest on a sustainable basis to ensure that you receive the very best products for your requirements. If we do not have the right trees we obtain them from other carefully selected sustainable sources. So we are closely involved and “hands-on” all the way through from the tree seed to the finished product. And in a way that is sensitive to the social needs and ecosystems within which we live, work and play.
Our forests are certified and managed according to internationally-recognised environmental standards – FSC®and ISO. They are immaculate. They provide the very best of raw materials to our wood processing mills which are also certified and managed according to international standards – including FSC®, ISO and EWPAA. Through innovative processes and skilled staff, our mills transform our harvested trees into high-quality products – products that are reliable and durable, that perform, and that can
be trusted.
Our range of products is wide and varied, but we are not limited to “off-the-shelf” solutions. If you cannot find what you are looking for in our current range then ask us about custom-made options to suit your exact needs. Such requests fit comfortably with our philosophy, and because we own the process from start to finish we will always try to meet your needs.
It is yet another reason why discerning customers who seek and demand the natural benefits of wood choose Juken New Zealand Ltd for top quality engineered and solid wood products.
Our Forest
Proper forest management is the key to producing the right trees for making the right products. We take pride in the way we manage and take care of our forests – from land preparation, seed selection, planting, disease and pest control, thinning, pruning, and harvesting. It’s a deliberate, methodical and continuous process to ensure that the product requirements of customers are met.We have 54,000 hectares of planted forests in 3 North Island regional locations – Northland, East Coast and Wairarapa. Our forests are close to our Mill operations ensuring freshly cut logs can be quickly and efficiently delivered for processing with minimal damage to the logs and with minimal impact on the environment. Our predominantly Radiata Pine forests are plantation grown with a particular tree quality and end-product in mind. We operate on a 30-year rotational cycle, but within this cycle we adjust tree stocking rates and silviculture regimes to ensure that we end up with wood that is true, that is stable, that looks good and that is well-suited to the innovative and high quality products that we make.
We carefully select and prepare the land and the seedlings to be planted, and we monitor and control diseases and pests. Our tree stocking adjustments include selective “thinning” to ensure managed and uniform growth of remaining trees, and our silvicultural practices include higher than normal “pruning” to achieve tree logs with a larger proportion of unblemished (clear) wood. Harvesting is undertaken with sensitivity to the environment and to natural features and habitats. And once trees are harvested the ground is prepared again in readiness for replanting, usually within 6 months.
Good policies and practices will only work when experienced, knowledgeable and committed people are “on the job”. We foster and encourage strong and enduring relationships with our staff and our contractors – people who are passionate about the forests they work in, about what they do, and about their importance in the supplier-to-customer product chain.
All of this means that a continual and sustainable supply of raw wood of the right grades is going into our Mills to be transformed into high quality products for our customers. And without touching our natural indigenous forest resources.
The Environment
“We will leave this forest in better shape for our children and grandchildren than it is now.” (Company President) “Your waste control project and the efforts of your workers was remarkable.” (TPM Auditor)
At Juken New Zealand Ltd our success depends on and reflects our commitment to the environment. Our customers demand it and we respond to that demand through our environmentally sensitive forestry and manufacturing processes. Our products deliver on that demand.
Not only is our very purpose environmentally friendly – replacing the use of non-sustainable hardwoods around the world with engineered and solid wood products from sustainably grown sources – we also strive for zero pollution, zero waste and zero complaints in all that we do. Ambitious targets indeed, and yet ones that we take very seriously.
In doing so we have set ourselves up to be measured and assessed against external benchmarks – the regulatory and consents environmental framework (local authority or central government), and internationally recognised environmental standards such as FSC® and ISO – to demonstrate our comittment to forestry and manufacturing environmental best practice.
In our journey towards zero pollution, zero waste and zero complaints we have installed waste and pollution control systems and equipment; we re-use, re-cycle and re-work wherever possible; and we work alongside our communities. Some examples – bark is used for garden mulch, veneer peeler cores are used for pallet gluts, forestry areas of significance and endangered species are protected, wetlands have been developed for run-off and waste water, and almost all of our mill energy requirements are fuelled from wood residue (bark, sawdust, chip).
A genuine committment to ensure that we make the right impression on the environment and that our customers can feel good about our products and the processes involved in making and getting it to them.
Forestry
How do you get wood from trees without losing forests? The answer lies in how well forests are managed, and at Juken New Zealand Ltd we manage ours to world-class sustainable standards – from land preparation, to harvesting, to replanting. These standards have been recognised by and are reflected in our FSC® and ISO certifications.
