Darrell has a passion mixing together elements of planting, timber, concrete and water to create stunning outdoor spaces that work for many years and enhance properties and add value.

He has had extensive experience throughout Auckland, Europe and England, in timber, concrete, steel, water, lighting and Mother Nature. This enables him to apply his skill, depth of knowledge and eye for quality control within the landscape industry.

Darrell’s long-term interest in horticulture motivated him to merge the complementary professions 20 years ago to form what is now Landsmiths.

Master Landscaper Darrell K. Smith heads up the Landsmiths team in his role as landscape manager and design consultant.

Landsmiths design, construct and maintain landscapes and have the expertise, people and equipment to undertake all types of landscaping from single gardens to large residential and commercial sites.

We undertake every aspect of landscaping from dazzling designs, to construction, project management, maintenance programs and even a complete garden care service. Anything is possible - from tiling, decking, garages, swimming pools, ponds, retaining walls, driveways, edgings, lawns and designer gardens, to planting areas and terraces.

We operate in conjunction with our landscape architects and designers on comprehensive structural plans and retain the ability to work alongside you to create conceptual drawings.

We have a network of experienced and professional contractors to call on for specialist tasks within each project.

As most gardens these days are rarely simple to construct, they usually require a multitude of skills and trades. We believe in a team approach and have long-standing relationships with professional excavation companies, masonry workers, tilers, plasterers, painters, concrete layers and electricians.

Of course our own teams take care of the day to day construction. 

Our design team can transform outdoor areas into multi-purpose spaces that are pleasurable and add value to any property.  

We oversee and project manage the whole process for you. 

Our contracts are all run under the Construction Contracts Act 2002.

We hold all necessary construction insurances. We operate a current Health and Safety Policy.

We have 20 years’ experience in the swimming pool industry and have a working relationship with the best of these pool installers. 

We are happy to work alongside your pool builder or ours.

We bring a coherent approach to the project and using the site to its best advantage. 

Sprayed concrete over boxing and steel reinforcing

• Any size or shape can be constructed using this method.
• As each shell is specifially engineered, the pool can be partially or totally above ground. Once the shell has cured, selected coping ston
• Coping stones and water line tiles are fitted along with a selected plaster internal finish.
• This is a labour intensive process, meaning it may be more expensive.

• Can be any shape and size. The selected colour is in the gel coat of the sprayed shell.
• Can be built above ground. Has the ability to flex and move a small amount.
• Usual coping stone and water line tiles are fitted.
• This is a specialised operation. Mid price. 

Drop in Fibreglass pool

• These are factory made under controlled conditions and offer a variety of sizes and shapes. A large selection of colours is available.
• This type of pool needs an in-ground location.
• Usual coping stone and water line tiles can be fitted.
• Very quick installation time. Low to mid-price bracket. An increasingly viable alternative due to
• new manufacturing processes.   
• All of these pools have their merits depending on your site, your budget and your lifestyle.

With 40 years in the industry and 4 years doing TVNZ gardening program make overs, I have had the opportunity to work with many Landscape designers and Landscape architects.

Designers have their place but Landscape architects come into their own when Council building or resource consents are a requirement. This is increasingly the case in Auckland. As sites become tighter, site coverage requirements become increasingly more a part of the equation.

A successful project always starts with an experienced design team. Then accurate documentation, and a workable design that takes into account the site, site access and the clients’ lifestyle.
