I first encountered Steven Hermans and the Lighthouse Lighting Company back in 2005 when we worked together on a new house project in Merivale Lane, Christchurch. This was the first of many successful and enjoyable collaborations we have had on both residential and commercial projects over the past 17 years.

The field of lighting technology and design has changed dramatically over this time with the advent of LED light sources and smart control systems. There is more choice and sophistication than before. The implications for architecture and interior design are both exciting and at times a bit daunting.

As architects our work covers a broad range of stuff about which we know a certain amount and beyond that we need expert input from others. With lighting for example, we often have an idea of what we want to achieve but we don’t know exactly how to achieve it. Getting it wrong can be expensive. Collaborating with the Lighthouse has allowed us to confidently present our design ideas to our clients, knowing that the technical and product back up is there.

As well as having access to some great European lighting products, the Lighthouse has on several occasions worked with us to fabricate bespoke lighting solutions, for example the feature pendant fitting in the main entrance of St George’s Hospital in Christchurch. This has involved coordination of several specialist trades including structural engineering.

We have always found Steven and his team to be open to our ideas, full of helpful advice and willing to help in various ways such as measuring light levels on site or providing mockups for testing.

We would have no hesitation in recommending the Lighthouse Lighting Company to any clients or fellow design consultants.

We were working on our new Kitchen. We wanted some lighting for our new breakfast bar, but also for our open plan spaces. We explained this to a staff member at Lighthouse who then arranged for a lighting consultant to come to our home. This was very helpful. They then made a plan for our lighting, after discussing what our needs were. Then he contacted us again in the following few days to show us what he had come up with. We are very happy with how they worked in with our time frames and the fabulous lighting our home now has. Thank you!!!

Without their guidance and expertise, I can honestly say that our homes would not have had the overall aesthetic impact they do, thus the importance of lighting.
