About Us
Hi, I'm Mike, I started Mike Thomson Builders.

I was born in Scotland and moved to New Zealand when I was five years old. I have lived in the Bay of Island's my entire life. I love it here because I love being close to the sea, and because I think Northland is one of the most beautiful spots in the world. That's why I chose to stay here with my family. And why wouldn't you want to build your dream home here too!

They say do what you love, and that's why I'm here.

Early on I decided to put my focus into finding an apprenticeship.

With plenty of labouring hours behind me, I was quickly signed up by one of the local builders, and trained through BCITO where I became an ‘Apprentice of the year finalist’.

Later when the builder I was working for retired, I applied for a Job with one of New Zealand’s Premiere High-end Residential Construction Company's. That same year I finished my apprenticeship and became a qualified builder. I worked for this company building the most amazing and challenging homes all over Northland. Seven years later they finally gave me the chance to run my own site.

After four years running some of Northland's most complex builds, I decided to take the leap and go out on my own. I truly believe with all the knowledge and experience I have gained over the years I will be able to take the best products and use the best tradie's to get the very best outcome for your project, saving you time and money, while getting you a home of the highest quality.

It is with absolute pleasure we write on behalf of Mike, after a year of false promises, shoddy workmanship from a local builder, by chance we were given Mikes contact number and thought why not we have nothing to lose, and thank goodness we dialled his number!

We had council approval to add to our home in Russell a utility room, he arrived on the day at the time he said he would to inspect the job and took it on immediately.

What took the previous registered builder 6 weeks to place a small amount of framing up and a temporary wrap to the extension – it took Mike 3 weeks to correct un-level framing having to rebuild one side entirely, rewrap, titan board the exterior, line the interior, fit a window, and door.

Mike is true to his word, when he says he will be onsite at 7 am he’s there working at 7 am not 7:15, he anticipates being at certain stages during the build and pre-books council inspections which is vitally important when building so there is absolutely no stand down for the builder or owner.

Nothing is to much trouble for him, like all owners once you have a builder on site its “what else do we need doing before we lose him”, well we did just that, he put up balustrade and built-in under the deck, made and installed a decorative door, oh I forgot to mention that was after he had completed a days work somewhere else on his way home.

Mike works with a true passion for his craft and his workmanship is second to none, a top guy, always happy, never saw him any other way.

As you can tell we think he’s the bee’s knees and hope that not too many people discover our saint because we still want him back for further development to our property.
