About us
Monk Mackenzie is a highly creative, multi-disciplinary studio of architects and designers.
The studio was established to provide clients with elegant, sculptural and poetic solutions to complex briefs.
The studio is an award winning architectural practice with a record of designing and delivering unique architectural solutions.
Partners Hamish Monk and Dean Mackenzie met while working with Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM) in New York and London and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in Hong Kong.
The studio aims to make a lasting contribution to the built environment in a sustainable and environmentally intelligent manner.
WHAT WE DO
Monk Mackenzie works across a range of projects in a number of highly specialised architectural areas.
These include civic and cultural projects, commercial, low, medium and high density residential and infrastructural work.
Monk Mackenzie is experienced across all these sectors both locally and internationally and can provide significant insights to our clients.
CIVIC | CULTURAL
We have extensive experience working with community, iwi, local and central government agencies to develop civic and cultural work.
This includes the design of the Hopuhopu masterplan work with Waikato Tainui, which included a Tribal Parliament, Whanau Ora Centre, Events Centre and tourist River Centre.
COMMERCIAL
The studio has significant experience in the design of new commercial buildings. These range from smaller mixed use commercial/retail projects to commercial towers internationally.
Currently Monk Mackenzie has active commercial projects in New Zealand, China and Malaysia.
INFRASTRUCTURE
We have designed many infrastructure projects currently under design or construction through New Zealand. We use extensive parametric and algorithmic digital modelling to optimise design work.
Our current projects range from pedestrian and road bridges, to rail/bus transport interchanges.
RESIDENTIAL
Monk Mackenzie has worked on a number of residential projects ranging from single dwellings to medium and high-density apartments.
Current projects include medium and high-density housing in New Zealand and Malaysia.
