Natural Habitats is New Zealand’s leading landscape design, build and care company, with a track record of delivering world-class landscape design projects throughout the country. We specialise in all aspects of landscape design, whether it is creating a little personal slice of paradise through residential landscape design, transforming businesses through commercial landscape design or working with local government to transform public spaces through civic landscape design and infrastructure creation.

Residential Landscaping

We understand the attachment New Zealanders have to their personal slice of heaven. Regardless of constraints, such as property challenges, we can still create a private paradise for you. Our residential garden design, build and care teams respond sensitively to how you want to live.

Green Technology

Natural Habitats has been a leader and innovator in green technology for more than 20 years. During that time we’ve installed vertical gardens, green walls and green roofs in hotels to hair salons, as well as homes, offices, universities, and public spaces throughout New Zealand. Easy to install and low maintenance, our clients appreciate the visual and physical benefits living walls and green roofs provide including fresher air and happier, healthier staff as well as providing naturally insulated spaces and significant energy savings.

Living walls - much better than a neon sign

Green walls can be great marketing tools according to retailers who install them. The Village Goldsmith commissioned a 5m x 3m green wall in its new downtown Wellington store and without exception, people comment on how much they love it, says owner lan Douglas. Douglas also adds that the vertical garden is one of their favourite aspects of their new fit-out, saying that in terms of advertising, a living wall is much better than a flashing neon sign!

Civic and Infrustructure

We have been involved in some of New Zealand’s largest infrastructure and civic works. We are dedicated to the transformation of the landscape around our country’s new and existing infrastructure. A Natural Habitats approach ensures natural and built systems work together to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Multi-Unit Housing

We have a strong commitment to multi-unit housing. Our designs can soften building exteriors with structures, plants and features to enhance community living and create sustainable, inviting entrances and walkways.

Infrastructure

We work collaboratively across both the private and public sectors of New Zealand’s largest infrastructure and civic works. We engage closely with iwi on numerous ecological projects to create culturally sensitive and meaningful landscape designs and to assist hapu with job opportunities and horticultural training.

Our Vision

Our vision is to reclaim the built environment, wrapping facades of buildings with epiphytic and lithophyte plants to add living, breathing architectural function.

We have a range of innovative, lightweight, leading-edge green technology solutions designed to provide both stunning visual aesthetics and environmental benefits.

Green Walls

Our Green Walls are a unique, lightweight and fully automated system. They are a soil-less vertical garden, installed on the surface of a built structure. Green walls are a dynamic way to green a vertical surface.

The greenery is like a living ‘skin’ with unlimited design opportunities. Sometimes called Living Walls, Green Facades, Bio Walls or Vertical vegetation, green walls help reduce temperatures of a building, improve quality of air and reduce noise levels.

Green Roofs

We created New Zealand’s first green roof back in 1995. The stunning design, reflecting the Hauraki Gulf, enabled Mirvac to gain resource consent to add four more floors to the property.

Not only beautiful, a living green roof with its own diversity in form, texture and colour, provides both internal and external benefits:

• Controlling the inside temperature of a building by moderating the ambient air temperature
• Providing greater insulation
• Filtering and controlling the release of rain and stormwater
• Reducing noise penetration
• Providing a habitable environment to promote biodiversity.

We've developed a unique green roof innovation which allows us to pre-grow vegetation into modular panels – we call these EcoPillows. EcoPillows are placed together to make up a green roof, they are pre-grown in our off-site nursery, making for a speedy installation and instant high impact.

Eco-Gabions

Our latest innovation, Eco-gabions, are an ultra-lightweight self-supporting planting system.A creative alternative to tree pits and planter boxes, our Eco-Gabions can be manufactured to almost any shape or size to suit all your planting desires.Eco-Gabions can be covered with decking veneer to provide seating, or fully planted on each side.

Commitment to the Environment

Being soil-less, our innovations are extremely lightweight. We are proud to manufacture our ‘eco-media’ using 94% recycled materials otherwise destined for landfills.

Our systems have been developed to thrive in the harshest of environments. We have installed green innovations in a range of New Zealand spaces, such as sheltered offices to windy high rises and battered beachfront properties. The technology is simple, effective and durable.

We are proud to make our country greener through ecological, intelligent Green design.
