Notch Architecture Ltd is an emerging practice focused on providing a quality, bespoke service to clients to enable them to execute their vision.

We engage with clients throughout the design process from initial thinking and forming a vision for the project, through to the design, detailing and completion of a building.

We strive to provide strong leadership to guide the clients and other stakeholders through the process. Our aim is to present complex issues in a presentable form to allow engagement of all participants in the project.

We understand that listening is a big part of the process. Listening to how things have come about and to lessons of the past is what will help guide us into the future that we aspire to. We measure our success through people and the community.

To notch carries a responsibility to understand the past, to provide hope and to be bold for our future.

Our Story

Jeremy Gray is the founding member of Notch Architecture Ltd. Jeremy was born and raised in Awakeri, Whakatāne and later studied at Victoria University’s Architecture School in Wellington.

After university, Jeremy gained industry knowledge and expertise under mentor Adam Mercer of Mercer and Mercer Architects in Auckland. While there he was design lead for a number of bespoke new houses, office alterations and commercial showrooms. He become a registered architect with the NZRAB in 2012 before heading to Scotland.

While in Scotland Jeremy worked in Glamis employed by James F Stephen Architects working on large 99-house schemes, heritage alterations, boarding school upgrades, and a community-lead upgrade of WW2 POW camp huts to self-catering accommodation pods with district heating. In Edinburgh, he was employed by Zone Architects, where he was design lead for a £2.1m terraced housing development, a couple of £500-750k extensions and various other projects.

It was at this point that Jeremy branched out to set up Notch Architecture to better serve his clients and their needs. Notch Architecture has worked in both Scotland and Aotearoa on new houses, heritage buildings, office alterations and has consulted on energy from waste power plant in Inverurie, Scotland.

The recent Covid pandemic meant an earlier-than-expected return to Aotearoa. Loaded with experience and knowledge of how things are done both here and in the UK, Notch Architecture Ltd is designing buildings that contribute positively to society and reflect cultural values for the Aotearoa we aspire to.
