Concrete Grinders & Polishers
About us
NZ Grinders is a New Zealand wide concrete polishing company dedicated to having the best equipment in the industry and delivering fast, efficient and satisfying results.
We noticed a gap in the New Zealand market: a clear need for grinding and polishing services that had the technical know-how and technology to service the commercial and industrial arena in a way that solved flooring issues while keeping costs as low as possible.
NZ Grinders also maintains an arsenal of smaller grinding and polishing equipment to service the domestic housing market, giving homes an affordable and attractive polish without breaking the bank.
Our acquisition of industry-leading equipment from HTC Sweden, including New Zealand's first and only HTC-1500 ride on grinder, allows us to produce smoothly polished floors with a speed and precision no other NZ polishing company can match.
This technology, combined with the intense attention to detail of our staff, means we can deliver super high-quality results with very fast turnaround times.
NZ Grinders is a nationwide business – with our head office and showroom in Tauranga, reps in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Taupo, and a branch in Queenstown covering the Southern Lakes area, we have highly mobile equipment which can quickly be transported to take care of jobs anywhere in the country.

Concrete Sealing
At NZ Grinders we love concrete sealing.
Concrete sealing comes in many different forms. We seal the concrete to stop hydrostatic pressure, waterproofing and to give a dust-free surface for garages, workshops, retail, outside decking and the likes.
We use a variety of concrete sealers from water base to solvent. Sealers range from natural which means the concrete has no colour added to sealers that have matt or gloss (wet look).
We use an industrial range that does not yellow from the U.V. and bite into the concrete. We never see any delimitation issues. We have sealers for exposed aggregate concrete and normal brushed concrete that help reduce efflorescence.
We do sealing with anti-slip and semi topical coatings to give protection from the elements.
Epoxy Coatings
At NZ Grinders we love epoxy coatings.

- Offices
- Gymasium
How Epoxy Resin Works
Typically 2 part mixes, part A and B are combined along with a colour pac.
This means that epoxy floor coatings can have 100% solids. Applying this to your floor means you're getting a coating that has more bang for your buck than any normal paint in the industrial landscape.
Superior abrasion and impact resistance make these coatings first choice for heavy-duty industrial and manufacturing areas, such as aircraft hangers and factories.
Epoxy coatings are not just limited to mainstream flooring ideals but have taken star development in newly developed epoxy that is warm to the touch.
Epoxy is ideal for restaurants, offices and even gymnasiums where reduction of noise and comfort underfoot is required. Add antibacterial micros and you have a floor that destroys 99.9% of bacteria on contact.
Choice of Colours, Choice of Looks
Combined with bright colours not only are epoxy floors aesthetic, they also give full stain and chemical resistance.
Different versions of epoxy exist with different aggregate hardeners like emery or silicon carbide. These added materials give the product performance for cool stores or constant wet areas while garage or workshop floor coatings have different formulas.
FAQ
Do you do epoxy floors? - Yes, we do floors from garages to commercial factories and warehouses.
What is epoxy coatings? - Epoxy coatings are a 2 part high build systems that are epoxy / resin-based, consisting of the main body and a hardener plus colour.
Are they all the same? - No. High industrial grade and chemically engineered epoxy's or resins can handle high traffic loadings and have high abrasion resistance. Some also handle hydrostatic moisture in the concrete and have excellent chemical resistance. Some coatings are designed to handle heat and intense washing with 75 C water.
What type of coatings do you do? - We do many types. Including anti-slip to outside flake floors to factory and screeds for butchers, cowsheds, epoxy floors for aircraft hangers and warehouses etc
Do you do coving? - Yes we do.
Polished Concrete Floors
At NZ Grinders we love polished concrete floors.
Polished Concrete is
- Fashionable
- Long lasting
- Ideal for homes, warehouses, shops
- Has a huge range of flooring options
- Saves money over alternate flooring options
- Easy to clean
- Perfect for industrial and residential use
- Ideal for heavy traffic areas
- Waterproof
Polishing concrete meets the council requirements of a +.45 slip coefficient factor. The slip resistance of a polish floor is no different than any normal flooring and in fact can be substantially higher with floors reaching as high as .8
Styling Polished Concrete Floors
Styles can also be produced into the concrete floor with etching, or a different colour, pattern, boarder at a particular area in the floor.
When outlining lines and etching, many designs can be invented that are very unique, but also detailed tile styles grids can be applied as well.
Custom-made signs or logos can also be put directly into the polished concrete floor, a terrific option on walk ways into retail and office stores.
Coloured Concrete
A wide array of colouring options are available. Colours can be solid and brilliant, or more translucent with lots of character producing a virtually marble-like floor.
Coloured concrete comes with all the same great benefits of other solid surface flooring but with the durability only concrete can make.
Environmentally-Friendly
Choosing coloured concrete over hardwood or carpets gives you a sustainable flooring options with many options in colour and texture. With other flooring options that are sustainable, eg some carpet fibre flooring, cork, bamboo etc, when they wear out they have to be placed in our land fills and replaced with more of the same products.
Using the concrete as part of the construction of the building, you have an eco friendly floor that will not wear out. Today these floors, when done right, provide the durability and stain resistance needed to last the life of the building. Also, polished concrete contributes no noticeable VOCs in the construction process.
Thermal Properties
Concrete floors use the energy of the sun and stored heat is released into the room. Heat from internal sources like fire places are also stored into the concrete. Under floor heating options vary and complement polished concrete.
Lighting
Increase of ambient lighting will enhance the warmth and beauty of your floor and reduce lighting costs. When this is used in supermarkets and warehouse environments there is noticeable energy savings.
FAQ
What is polished concrete?
Think of polishing concrete as refining the concrete surface with a grinding and polishing action to give hard, dense, thermal gains, stain resistant, very easily cleanable and long lasting floor. There is NO coating applied, so nothing to chip or peel or discolour.

There is a stain guard protection chemical system applied similar to how polish is applied for a car paint job. Our systems are fully waterproof which means no staining from red wine and the likes.
How is the concrete polished? - You start with coarse blades attached to a grinder 400+ kg in weight (smaller grinders work but in some cases they do not produce stone if the concrete is too hard) to take away layers at a time to produce the chosen stone content e.g salt and pepper (fines only) or full stone etc. Once this is established and all imperfections are fixed, the polish process takes place with finer diamonds to produce polished concrete from 400 up to 3000 diamond finish. Chemicals and concrete protection systems are added to change the chemical structure of the concrete to give hardness and stain protection, partial or full.
Is it important how the concrete is laid? - It is everything to the concrete polished job. Poorly laid concrete will result in a less than ideal polish job. A good concrete layer is totally complementary to a concrete grinding company. Want high end results? Then we have a list of preferred concrete contractors. Currently we are producing custom polished floors, ask us about this new and exciting process.
Is all concrete polishing the same? - No, definitely not. Good machinery, techniques and a wealth of knowledge is the key to an un-beatable high end finish. All our systems carry a 10 year warranty. If you want your floor to carry its shine year after year then it is important that steps are not skipped in the polishing process.
Can concrete polishing be water proof? - Yes. There are new polished chemicals that give waterproofing and stain control against oils etc. Every system is different and gives different levels of protection for polished floors. These systems soak into the matrix of the concrete and form micro umbrellas that stop ingression of liquids.
Is coated concrete or grind and seal the same? - No. Coatings are topical. Another words, they sit of the surface. You're looking at a coating that is covering the concrete. Polished concrete is about refining the surface. Coatings typically scratch over time. The finish of polished concrete is so super fine that tyre marks don't stick. Coatings are generally cheaper as they do not require precision grinding.
What's the #1 reason for polished floors?
Depends on who it is for – let's take a quick look
- Residential – For its aesthetics
- Commercial and Retail – It's trendy and upbeat
- Industrial – Maintenance and dust free
- Green Construction – Eco friendly
Are there harmful VOCs? - No
Can rain damaged or old worn out concrete be polished? - Yes, watch us transform even poorly laid concrete into a polished work of art. Though poorly laid floors do not come up as good as concrete that has been placed for polishing, the results can still be good to excellent. We can fix even badly pitted or cracked concrete.
Is it slippery? - No. All our floors meet council co-efficient slip rating
How long will it last? - It is a permanent process, there is no wax or coatings applied that will eventually fail. When we are finished with your floors it is bare concrete that has been permanently polished. General cleaning will keep the floors looking amazing, year after year. In high traffic areas simple buffing can be done along side the general cleaning but this will be less frequent. A re-application of polish can be applied also at any time, this is similar to polishing a car's paint job.
How much does concrete polished floor cost per SQ/M? - Largely dependent on the size of the job and other factors the price can vary. Generally if you're expecting a full grind to stone job of distinction then look at prices from $50 to $130 per SQ/M for domestic finishes as this requires more attention to detail thus having a higher labour content. Detail is given to edges. Larger size areas such as warehouses etc are different in price and can be considerably cheaper. We price of the plan or a SQ/M- every job is different, email us and we will respond with a price within 24hours.
How do we know we are getting quality? - Ask for a certified contractor and ask to see their credentials. Craftsmanship combined with quality grinding and polishing machines will produce excellent results.
At what stage should the polishing be done? - Depending on what finish we need to do the first 4 steps normally before frames go up around day 6. If this is not possible then before the gibbing. The later steps are done at the end of painting or end of gib stopping before skirting. In the likes of commercial then we normally are one of the last contractors. Salt and pepper finishes are done after framing.
What should I expect with Polished Concrete? - Polished concrete will deliver a hard, durable, easily cleanable floor.
Concrete Grinding
At NZ Grinders we love concrete grinding.
Large and small areas are no problems for our technically-advanced grinding machines. From our small HTC 270 edger to our mind-blowing ride on 1.9-ton grinder which can deliver 1500 SQ/Metres of hard grinding in 1 day, leaving the floors flatter than any other grinder on the market.
Concrete grinding is the method of using diamond blades called shoes and concrete grinding machines to remove adhesives, glues or levelling the surface for the preparation of vinyls, wooden floors etc.
Many different grinders are available on the market and all offer variations to grinding concrete. Our machines and our highly trained staff provide a dust-free environment with low noise with excellent results.
NZ Grinders' machines are all highly efficient which means high production for our clients, resulting in lower costs.
We do floor prep/concrete grinding for car parks, houses, workshops, aircraft hangers etc for floor coatings and rain-damaged concrete.
