What is Plaster?

It is a building material used for the protective and decorative coating of walls. The most common types of plaster mainly contain either gypsum, lime, or cement. Gypsum is used internally only. The plaster is manufactured as a dry powder and is mixed with water to form a workable paste before it is applied to the surface. The reaction with water causes crystallization and the hydrated plaster then hardens.

Can you plaster over a pre-existing paint coat?

It is generally not recommended to plaster over paint as the plaster will only last as long as the paint coat does. In many cases, there is no other option as to plaster over paint. It depends on, in which state the paint coat is. If the paint is flaky, porous or has any visible signs of bubbles then it’s best practice to mechanically remove it. If the paint coat is in good condition, we can use special bonding primers to achieve a suitable key coat for the plaster system.
