SmartGrass

How it works

Your existing lawn is dug out and replaced with a layer of free-draining compacted rock. SmartGrass is then laid over this permeable base, and dressed with a layer of very fine sand.

The sand that is spread on top of the grass has two jobs:

1. This sand (called “sand infill”) sits between the grass blades and weighs down the lawn – it also makes it impossible for dogs to dig through because it locks in place.
2. It stops any dog poo or debris from getting stuck between the blades of grass making it effortless to pick up.

SmartGrass is installed on a base of compacted rock – similar to what is underneath pavers. This is free draining (so the dog pee disappears), and because it is strong, the base won’t undulate over time (unlike a real lawn). Dog poo is very easy to pick up and the grass can be hosed if required. We recommend using SmartGrass Turf Care Spray after picking up after your dog, as it has an enzyme that breaks down anything you miss. This also sanitises and deodorises the lawn.

Is SmartGrass Popular?

How is artificial grass installed?

It can be used to retrofit an existing lawn or laid onto concrete, decks, butynol and many other surfaces. It comes on rolls (similar to the carpet), and is usually laid by a specialist installer. When we retrofit an existing lawn, the grass and soil are removed. SmartGrass is laid on a compacted rock base with great drainage properties (it is not laid on soil). 

What is the average-sized installation?

We install lawns as small as a few square metres, up to international grade sports fields with our sports products. No area is too small. The average residential installation is around 20-200m2 for a lawn and 500-600m2 for a tennis court. 

How much does SmartGrass cost?

Artificial grass itself is priced per square metre (typically between $35-65/m2 +gst depending on the type), however, the cost of the installation depends on a few factors.

A professional installation that is 30-100m2 in size typically costs (for the supply and installation of the grass):

• $100-140/m2 for direct installation to a prepared base, concrete, patios, decks and balconies.
• $140-$230/m2 for converting an existing lawn (i.e. the full excavation, base construction, supply and installation of artificial grass).

Small areas (under 30m2) tend to cost approx. $180-$350/m2

For comparison, SmartGrass does cost significantly more than a real lawn upfront, but saves you thousands in maintenance costs long term. Per square metre, fully installed, SmartGrass is a similar cost to paving / outdoor tiles. SmartGrass is about half the cost of Kwila decking. The above figures are ballparks only, there are many factors that can determine the cost of your installation. These are things like the product you choose, your location, the shape of the area, technicality of the install, access to the site and the base preparation requirements. 

What is SmartGrass made of?

Most SmartGrass is made of UV stabilised polyethylene. This is a very durable recyclable plastic that is resistant to fading and stains.
