The Design Commission

To ensure your renovation is a success, let The Design Commission manage all the details for you. Be it a kitchen or bathroom renovation, whole house renovation or new addition, here’s what to expect from us.​

Design Consultation
The initial onsite consultation is at no cost to you and is with our qualified, experienced interior designer.​

Prior to our meeting at the property, it’s valuable for you to consider your goals for the space. Consider, what is the purpose and scope of your renovation? What are your desired outcomes? Are there styles, materials, colours that you love? Will you need built-in storage or any new furniture? Have you found pictures of interiors that inspire you? We’ll discuss all this and more during your initial onsite consultation.​

Clients will then receive a personalised Commissioning Letter summarising their renovation brief, the design and construction process, and including an initial design services cost assessment.​

1. Design service
Once we’ve met, if you’re keen to proceed, we will move into the interior design process.​

Our design service objectives are;

The design stage is an enjoyable process for clients. It entails several site visits, plenty of discussions, sketching, sharing design ideas and images.  This stage takes time to ensure your goals are met through custom solutions. All aspects of the renovation are addressed, with layout resolutions, design ideas and suggested materials and finishes presented to you across several meetings.

2. Sourcing beautiful sustainable finishes, fittings and furnishings
At The Design Commission, we’ve had 10+ years of experience sourcing sustainable materials and furnishings. We understand this process can be daunting, and the options – from tiling to lighting, flooring to cabinetry - are always growing.

How do you find the best eco-friendly products within budget? How do you apply them in ways that reduce waste, improve your health and result in a beautiful space? We fast track this process for you, by specifying quality finishes, fittings and furnishings to complete your interiors. Our expertise takes the time and effort out of creating a sustainable home.

This process includes providing samples, advice on all products and finishes, and specifying all items and suppliers, all presented to you in comprehensive schedules that can be referred to by all trades.

3. Administration of your renovation
The Design Commission can project manage your renovation for you, from the design stage through to construction and completion of your new space. Every project is different so talk to us about how we can simplify yours.

Administration includes;​

• Working through the tender process to find a builder and/or other trades
• Engaging consultants such as engineers, quantity surveyors, certifiers where needed
• Coordinating documentation for council approval and construction
• Coordinating trades and suppliers to deliver documentation and realise the project
• Site visits to supervise installation and delivery

Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD)

The Design Commission assists clients in planning sustainability strategies and specifies materials and products that meet high sustainability standards.​

We engage in the research and implementation of environmentally sustainable building practices, using rigorous design to create interior spaces that are thermally comfortable, healthy and have minimal embodied energy: good for the user and good for the environment. This means using building systems, materials, paint, fixtures, fittings and furniture that are minimally polluting in their production and application, and which can be reused or recycled in the future.

Breathing new life into old spaces, furniture and materials increases their value, reduces waste and leaves a legacy for the future. Reducing energy costs and selecting new materials, finishes and furniture that have a low carbon footprint and no nasty VOCs completes the strategy for a healthy, durable and efficient home.

​The Design Commission was a Highly Commended finalist in the 2017 International Green Interiors Awards and was a shortlisted finalist in the 2017 Sustainability Awards Single Dwelling Alteration/Addition category.​

In 2020, we were awarded Best Alteration/Renovation in the Randwick City Architecture & Urban Design Awards for the coastal home KENZAI.

Jacqueline Bosscher is a member of the Green Building Council of Australia continuing professional development program and a professional member of the Design Institute of Australia.
