Hard Landscaping

Hard landscaping defines, enhances and adds value to your garden

Imagine spending time taking a dip in your new swimming pool, grilling the fish you caught earlier on the BBQ or mixing a drink in front of your outdoor fireplace. With high-quality hard landscaping from York Landscaping you can make the most of your section year-round.

We offer a range of landscape construction services for homes in Auckland and across the North Shore and Hibiscus Coast, and, through our garden design service, can help you decide on the best use of your space (and your budget) including the right plants to complement your new area.

Take your entertaining to the next level with a built-in outdoor kitchen, BBQ area or outdoor fireplace

If you love entertaining family and friends with a BBQ or a few drinks, then adding an outdoor kitchen can take your parties to the next level.

Once your deck or patio is installed, our team can add features such as built-in BBQs or pizza ovens, stone or concrete countertops for easy food and drink preparation, seating areas and fireplaces or fire pits for that wow factor in the evening. As an experienced landscaping company, we can advise on the best layout and elements for your outdoor kitchen and how to create the right indoor/outdoor flow.

Define form and function with high-quality decks and fencing

Timber hardscaping helps to define areas of your section while enhancing the natural backdrop. Our team can install:

Timber decks - Improve indoor/outdoor flow and increase your entertaining space with a stylish timber deck.

Pergolas and louvre roofing - Add your deck by installing a pergola or louvred roof. These structures give you added shelter on very sunny or slightly rainy days (and we all know that Auckland can have four seasons in one day sometimes), making your deck a more usable space.

Fencing - from simple but solid boundary fencing to intricate fencing to section off areas of your garden, such as creating a hideaway seating area or screening a spa, we offer a wide range of timber and metal fencing. We can also install council-compliant fencing around your new swimming pool.

Retaining walls - Timber retaining walls, used to create terraces or make sloping land more stable, allow you to use parts of your section that may previously have been inaccessible. Built well, retaining walls can become an integral feature of your landscaping.

Create hardwearing spaces with concrete patios, paths and driveways

You may think that concrete is boring, but done well it can be used to add landscaping features that are not only interesting but durable and hardwearing. Our team can create:

Patios - A good, lower-maintenance alternative to a timber deck, a concrete patio gives you a good entertaining space. Add interest by choosing a finish like coloured concrete which could complement or contrast with your home or polished concrete.

Outdoor paving - Stone or concrete pathways and paving provide you with access to different parts of your garden and paving can also be used as part of swimming pool landscaping to create safe walkways.

Stairs - If your landscaping covers different levels, then fixed or floating concrete steps can be a stylish way of connecting areas.

Driveways - Improve your street appeal with a new or improved driveway. Driveways can also be extended to increase parking space.

Concrete can also be used for features such as planter boxes, seating or outdoor benchtops.

Pool

The right landscaping adds the perfect finishing touch to your swimming pool

A pool is a fantastic addition to any property, especially in the Auckland and North Shore areas to make the most of those tropical summer temperatures.

But, installing a swimming pool is a big investment so you want to feel confident that the pool and surrounding landscaping are well-designed and carefully installed. the best way to do that is by working with an experienced landscaping company.

York Landscaping can work with you from concept and design through to the installation of the pool and the landscaping to anchor it into your overall garden concept. Hard landscaping options include decking, tiling or paving, pergolas or louvred roofs for shade, seating areas and outdoor kitchens, all complemented by appropriate planting for your terrain and your lifestyle.

If you have already arranged a new pool or swim spa and simply need the area landscaped, or you have an existing pool and would like to update the surrounding area, our team can assist. Alternatively, we can arrange everything on your behalf including the sourcing and installation of the new pool.

If you can imagine it, we can help deliver it.

Things to think about when planning your pool

Adding a pool can really enhance your space but with a big investment, you want to plan properly. Things to consider before putting in a pool include:

  • the size and shape of the pool
  • whether your pool will be in-ground or above ground
  • whether the pool will be heated
  • what sort of cover you want to install
  • whether you want any accessories like lighting or waterfall features
  • how you want the pool surround to look - for example, tiling or decking
  • whether you want any kind structure near your pool such as a small pool house or entertaining space
  • what sort of fencing you want

Our team will talk through these areas with you as we design your backyard pool, to ensure the finished area is everything you imagined.

Keep your pool safe and compliant with adequate fencing

Your swimming pool needs to be fenced with safe and council-compliant fencing. Regular inspections are carried out after the fencing is installed to ensure it remains compliant.

A fenced area must cover the immediate area around the pool. It must not include any playground equipment, vehicle or pedestrian access or anything not related to the pool. Trees or anything that a child could climb on for access must not be in the immediate area outside the fencing.

A pool fence must:

  • be at least 1.2m above the ground
  • fitted with a latching device that is at least 1.5m above the ground if it is accessible outside the barrier or 1.2m if inside the barrier
  • have a gap between the bottom of the fence and ground level of not more than 100mm
  • have gates and doors that open outwards away from the pool area
  • have gates that are self-closing

You can use existing fencing or buildings as part of your pool fence as long as they are secure and any doors or gates leading to the pool are self-closing.
