Situated amongst the warehouses and sprawling terraces of Sydney’s beautiful Surry Hills, the three-storey home - while grand in its appearance, has a footprint of just 30 square metres.
Designed by the SJB Director himself, this project was born from the notion of Adam, husband Michael (and their dog Eric) of wanting to live smaller and simpler, without sacrificing anything. The couple’s home does just that, with sustainable practices in mind. Observing the project’s exterior, repurposed Krause Bricks are used to create windows and recesses of all shapes and sizes, bringing playfulness to the street corner.
“Brickwork and arched windows pay tribute to neighbouring terraces, but the golden hew and haphazard spacing refigure these familiar tropes in unfamiliar ways.
Krause Bricks has been a family owned and run business since 1945. The traditional craftsmanship and methods of clay brickmaking have been passed down through three generations, with each one adding their own innovations and modernisations.
