This unique apartment in the Tahunanui Hills, has all the lighting bells and whistles, with Switch Lighting products installed throughout this sultry boudoir smokey lounge themed renovation project.

Perched on the hills of Tāhunanui, Nelson, “The Upside Down” transforms a previously dark and dated 1950s two-bedroom basement into a stylish and independent spacious one-bedroom apartment. This six-month renovation project resulted in a designer unit featuring a bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, dining space, lounge, and a separate outdoor entertainment area. This property is a testament to how thoughtful lighting design and advanced control solutions can transform a space into a stylish and unique haven.

Lighting Design Concept

The vision was to create a boudoir smoky lounge vibe, blending rich colours and unique interior design elements to craft a stylish and inviting space. The basement was renovated with burnt orange walls, a psychedelic mural, and modern black kitchen fixtures, all contributing to the overall theme.

Lighting played a critical role in achieving the desired atmosphere, while complementing the unique interior design. All luminaires specified were Switch Lighting Tunable White, allowing for versatile and dynamic lighting control throughout the apartment.

Cirro Ceiling Washer

Both the lounge and bedroom feature the Cirro Ceiling Washer for elegant indirect lighting. This luminaire casts a soft cloud-like illumination across the ceiling. And when integrated with Switch Lighting Intelligent Controls, controlling the colour temperature and intensity allowed the lighting to playfully interact with the surrounding materials, enhancing their textures and tones.

Zela Deep Tilt

Zela Deep Tilt fittings with black trim were specified in the kitchen, dining and bedroom spaces, where quality lighting is essential to ensure the natural wood grains and textures are portrayed in their best warm and rich tones.

Zela Offset Deep Tilt

In the lounge, the Switch Lighting Zela Offset Deep Tilt luminaires are programmed into an automated lighting scene, transforming the mural wall into a dynamic work of art.

The vivid blues of the artwork come alive under the cool 4000K Casambi-enabled lighting, while the rich reds emerge with dramatic intensity as the lights slowly dim to a warm 1800K, enhancing the mural’s depth and vibrancy.

The bathroom with its dark walls, designer stone basin, and copper wall accent, is beautifully enhanced with the Zela décor Fixed with a rich copper insert to further enhance the warm emitted down the copper wall tiles. And the Mini-Lightz Deep Fixed are placed on the perimeter of the shower to create a non-invasive illumination from overhead.
