The adoption of a strategic approach prompted the Council to shift towards more agile, adaptable, and cooperative work methods, both in-person and virtually, facilitated by innovative technology solutions.
The former building was transformed into a modern and sustainable office space for Auckland Council’s 2,700 staff. The 28,000 m2 office space is Green Building Council accredited with a 6-star rating.
The workplace environment has no offices, enabling occupants to transition seamlessly from individually assigned to unassigned workspaces. Our design team worked closely with the council’s Workplace Performance group to create an ‘Experience Centre’, a successful prototype for the future workplace.
Thirteen iwi groups were consulted through the council’s Māori Advisory board to inform interior graphics and common area themes, resulting in an impressive Pare over the Albert Street entranceway.
The universal access group collaborated with the design team, resulting in an interior that exceeds basic accessibility codes. The building achieved a 6-star rating, with initiatives such as LED lights and a building management system resulting in a 40% reduction in energy use and savings of $300,000 per year.
Waste reduction was also a priority, with organics and food waste feeding 78 on-site worm bins and 85% of construction waste being recycled or sold. Overall waste generated during the fit-out was reduced by 50% through the reuse of materials and fittings.
The transformation is remarkable - what was once a conventional office space is now a vibrant, agile, and collaborative environment that has earned a prestigious 6-star Green Building Council accreditation for its outstanding sustainability.
