Balwyn North

Located in Balwyn North (Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country), ‘Albatino' is a tailored interior design project which transformed a 100sqm portion of a newly built, double-storey home into a refined, inviting retreat for a busy professional woman. The brief called for a warm, modern space that balanced comfort and sophistication—ideal for both relaxing after work and entertaining guests.

Despite its elegant herringbone American oak floors, the original home felt stark and lacked character. The design focused on softening the space and enhancing functionality without structural changes. Key interventions included a custom bar installed in an unused nook adjacent to the dining area, repurposing a walk in storage cupboard to house a full-size Sub-Zero wine cabinet, and adding a striking Kalfire electric fireplace that combined ambience with practicality.

Furniture and finishes were selected to introduce warmth, texture, and personality. Nacarado quartzite stone, walnut-toned panelling, brass lighting, smoked glass, and earthy hues formed a grounded, Mediterranean-inspired palette. Soft furnishings—like sheer flax curtains, a green modular sofa, and natural fibre pendants—reinforced the relaxed, worldly aesthetic.

Drawing on the client’s love of travel and hospitality, we blended timeless materials with contemporary styling. The result is a layered, welcoming home that reflects the client’s lifestyle while complementing the leafy, established neighbourhood. Through thoughtful detailing and clever use of space, the project elevates a blank canvas into a uniquely personal sanctuary.
