This pair of townhouses are located in a tree-lined street in Balwyn. The street preserves a strong and consistent built character with original houses which puts the onus on the design of any new buildings to integrate within the existing fabric without mimicking the existing houses.

DESIGN

The townhouses are designed as a contemporary interpretation of the forms, features and materiality evident in the street. An asymmetrical design allows this house to actively contribute to the single dwelling character of the street whilst offering two separate dwellings with very different layouts, orientation and outdoor aspects.

The site is a generous block of land with dual frontage and falls away from the street. Both townhouses are terraced into the fall of the site with tiered outdoor areas, pool deck and partially underground level for garages, cellar, and amenities. Garages are located to the rear of the building are accessible from the rear laneway, making the house frontages occupied by more dynamic uses like bedrooms and entry galleries. The long floorplates are broken by the courtyard garden and pool deck that forms the outdoor focal point while the internal green wall forms a magnificent backdrop to the kitchen-dining area.

Exterior finishes palette with slate shingles, terracotta tiles and earthy clay render is a deliberate attempt to blend with the street character. Internally, a mix of black timber, brushed champagne metal and light colour natural stone create an elegant and upbeat living environment.

Balwyn townhouses present a great overall outcome- sympathetic response to its location whilst maintaining its unique identity.
