Our Centennial project saw the renovation of an existing 4 bedroom, 5 bathroom Queens Anne home with MCK Architects and Sydney Beach Homes. The project took 20 months and clients are long standing client’s of AKD; this being the second project we have worked with them and the second time we have worked on the interiors for this incredible home.

The original home was very well kept and very much loved but needed a fresh injection of an improved footprint, bathroom upgrades, colour consult, furniture and fixture selection.

Our design needed to support the new rooms, the new footprint, joinery and colour. Our client did not want and cold grey and white home, but rather a space that supported their love of colour, art as well as working for easily entertaining and living. Each space had an element of luxe while bringing the old part of the home into synthesis with the new.

A matt palette with lush burnt oranges set behind a green/grey wall were used to offset the base tone of blacks and earthiness of the rugs. Deep green sofa in the large family room was created to highlight the green from the garden and the hints in the rug. Wall colour in the guest room and bedding was also important.

In terms of materials supporting character of the home, visual texture was paramount. The 4.2m chandelier in the stairwell was a custom creation by Yellow Goat Designs was integral to the modern injection in the historical staircase space. It set the tone for an interior that is modern in a grand heritage home. The choice in concrete used throughout was soft and a stunning tie in to the new flooring colours. Along with the flooring grounding the space the connectivity from old to new was highlighted by a glass light well in the new part of the home highlighting the historical brick facade and creating a gentle nod to its past life.

Furniture selection revolved around our knowledge of the client’s art collection as well as using unique shapes of the home to be reflected and supported in a curved sofa and soft edges of the dining chairs. The joinery colour and palette of the newly built structure was monochromatic yet full of interesting texture. All elements were carefully curated with a hand made, bespoke element to enhance the importance and function of each space.

A truly beautiful project to work on.
