The redevelopment of Auckland’s iconic Chief Post Office (CPO) celebrates the building’s rich architectural heritage while introducing carefully considered contemporary elements.

Crittall was engaged to fabricate and install bespoke steel joinery for the feature entry, along with various steel windows, doors and glazed screens throughout the building. The slender steel profiles and finely detailed glazing provide a natural complement to the CPO’s original masonry, decorative tiling and historic architectural features.

Working within an existing heritage structure required careful coordination, precision fabrication and considered installation. The resulting steelwork respects the character and proportions of the original building while providing the functionality and performance required of a modern public space.

The project demonstrates the enduring suitability of Crittall steel joinery for heritage architecture, where strength, slender sightlines and timeless detailing allow new elements to sit confidently alongside the original fabric of the building.
