Churchill is comprised of a black cedar-clad box lightly resting over two in-situ concrete walls, with another black box out front forming the garage and boundary fence.
The verticality of the cedar and glass is contrasted by the horizontality of the concrete walls. A discreet garage door becomes a flat black cedar wall when closed.
Rough-sawn timber shuttering creates textured walls that ooze out at the edges.
Rectangular cut-outs in the concrete walls emulate the penetrations in the upper box.
The poured concrete walls are exposed on both sides, providing an interesting texture that also forms part of the internal nature of the house.
The courtyard and ground floor are level, making a very usable and convertible space
The kitchen opens up to the back garden via floor-to-ceiling sliding doors.
The view from the back garden shows the upper box perched over the concrete wall and the glazed living area below. Upstairs, the master bedroom overlooks mature trees and the garden.
The monochromatic interior colour scheme includes an all-white kitchen with stainless steel benchtops and black lights and fixtures.
Behind the kitchen is a scullery and laundry with a window view of the garden.
In the lounge area, the fireplace has all-black surrounds with a solid concrete hearth.
A long skylight pulls light into the entrance and staircase.
The entrance foyer doubles as an art gallery.
The master suite is a sanctuary for the client and when they lay in bed, they look directly out over the tree tops through glazing that extends beyond the flooring and the ceiling edges.
Even the upstairs bathroom has a skylight to flood the space with light.
A huge window creates an outlook in the master bathroom.
The downstairs guest bathroom.
