A play on solid and transparent, grounded and airborne. 

The open frame cantilevered over the solid stone base, together with the balancing, cantilevered glass box provides a simple airiness to the whole house. This relies on the substantial grounding of the solid stone walls to provide the pivot, with the site falling away on all sides from the entry court.   

Auckland’s volcanic stone gives strength and brilliant sound-proofing. It also makes a fine bed for epiphytes. The plywood floor, set out in a Japanese mat pattern, is light and strong and forms a fine definition for living and dining remaining open for a rug collection.
