Recently moving into a modernist 1960’s built apartment block over looking the Glebe foreshore and Anzac bridge, the clients brief was to update the dated kitchen to be in line with her taste and to sit in harmony within the whole apartment.
By demolishing the internal non-load bearing walls enclosing the existing kitchen we were able to open it up to the entire living space creating a free flowing, open plan space. By opening up the space we were able to pull in the natural light and ventilation from the kitchen window whilst also allowing the client to perch at the new kitchen island whilst enjoying the beautiful Sydney view.
The aesthetic for the project was centered around a modern take on a mid-century kitchen. The client appreciated the 1960’s combination of dark walnut timbers and bright colours along with the typical modernist design details.
The kitchens features including the black and white checkerboard lino flooring, the textured walnut timber laminate joinery doors, the white laminate benchtops with exposed PLY edge details, the sliding mustard yellow glass doors in overhead joinery, and rectangular and textured neutral tile splashback with contrasting grout all make reference to the mid-century design era and allow the kitchen to sing in the 1960’s apartment block.
Complimenting the surrounding vintage mid-century furniture, selection of objects and appliances in the apartment, the kitchen acts as a vibrant working space to not only cook and entertain but to exhibit the client's personality and character.
