Glendhu Bay Holiday Park is on the shore of Lake Wanaka, which is a source of drinking water for the local region. The park’s new wastewater system had to consistently meet treatment requirements to ensure the water was safe for both recreation and consumption.
Innoflow chose the Orenco® AdvanTex® AX-Max™ Treatment System, an economical option that would reliably meet the discharge limits with only a small environmental footprint.
The new system caters for a peak volume of 150,000 L/day and includes primary (septic tanks), secondary (AX-Max plant) and tertiary (ultraviolet) treatment. Although the entire plant is so unobtrusive that visitors didn’t realise what had changed, the improvements are tangible — no more smells and no need for peak season pump-outs.
Schools are unique community environments housing dozens or hundreds of precious young residents during the day, then often remaining empty in the evenings and school holidays.
Wastewater systems must not only perform consistently despite these variable loads; they must also fit safely within the school environment and be easy to expand as the school roll grows.
In small schools, space is at a premium and sprawling septic systems and disposal fields come at the cost of playground space or sports fields. The AdvanTex® system offers the option of a very small footprint without sacrificing performance.
AdvanTex treatment plants have hard wearing, lockable covers, which means there is no likelihood of damage to the plant or risk of contact with children. Even if irrigation fields are close to recreational areas, there is no health risk as a very low loading rate (e.g., 4mm/day) can be used and a high quality of effluent dosed to subsurface drip irrigation lines.
We have installed the AdvanTex treatment plant and primary drainage system in as little as a week, which means a school’s wastewater system can be replaced during the holidays.
Campgrounds and parks are often located in pristine coastal, lakeside or mountain environments, and effective wastewater management is critical. With the need to protect drinking water supplies and avoid effluent overflows in peak seasons, treatment systems must perform to a high level year-round.
In most holiday spots, visitor numbers (and therefore wastewater flows) are highly variable. Treatment systems need to be able to respond quickly after periods of disuse and produce consistently high-quality filtrate despite sporadic flows.
Space is sometimes extremely limited, with a desire to keep as much land as possible free for campsites. In remote locations with limited local technical support, systems may need to run on solar power and must be low-maintenance and hassle free.
These sites often present other challenges as well, including shallow or sandy soils, high water table, wide temperature fluctuations, and limited water supply.
