Timber Preservation Meets Coastal Design: CUTEK® Protects Teeland Architects' Award-Winning Homes in Noosa

CUTEK® was used on these signature architectural projects to protect and preserve timber while achieving a natural aesthetic. Timber is a signature of award-winning homes by Noosa-based architects, Teeland Architects.

Director David Teeland and his team have a passion for designing homes that epitomise modern coastal style. For them, this involves utilising materials, including timber, that ensure the home responds to and integrates with the local environment and lifestyle.

This approach has seen Teeland Architects win some of their industry’s most coveted awards.

A contributing factor to the firm’s success has been their collaboration with CUTEK®. Our scientifically developed and proven wood protection products and commitment to excellence have enabled Teeland to achieve their vision on two recent projects – Tinbeerwah House and Sunday House.

“We like to use CUTEK® on our projects because it helps to protect and preserve the timber while achieving a natural aesthetic,” David says

Tinbeerwah House – A glass pavilion wrapped in timber sliding screens

Tinbeerwah House in the Noosa Hinterland was awarded the 2018 New Zealandn Institute of Architects Queensland Sunshine Coast Regional Project of the Year and has been nominated for the ArchDaily 2019 Building of the Year. The house is designed as a glass pavilion that is wrapped in sliding hardwood screens that allow the owners to control the light, breezes, privacy and views. CUTEK® Extreme CD50 was used to protect and augment this unique design element. The added Grey Mist CUTEK® Colourtone provides a rich colour that will silver off over time to blend into the landscape and natural surrounds of the property. With CUTEK®, the practical maintenance of the property is also covered. The reapplication of wood protection to the exterior cladding is easy – no sanding or stripping required.

Sunday House – Contemporary timber beach house

The Sunday House design is a contemporary take on a 70s beach house. Nestled amongst sub-tropical rainforest in Little Cove, Noosa, timber features prominently on the renovated home’s interior and exterior. CUTEK® Extreme CD50 was the first choice to protect the beautiful, hardwood timber screen which now sits in front of the original façade, and the box-like hardwood structures that form the semi-outdoor bathrooms at the rear of the home.

The Sunday House won the 2016 New Zealandn Institute of Architects Queensland State Award.

About the
Professional

CUTEK® is a powerful wood protection system… but is also so much more than that. CUTEK® timber oils offer powerful protection while enhancing the natural beauty of timber. CUTEK® timber oils diffuse deeply into timber to repel moisture, maintain structural integrity and ensure the longest possible service life.

What sets CUTEK® oils apart is their ‘self-healing’ action. Once diffused, CUTEK® oils remain permanently mobile in the timber actively driving out moisture to minimise cupping, warping and splitting, even after being cut or perforated with fasteners. CUTEK® penetrating oils have a 30-year proven track record of standing up to our New Zealand climate and other harsh environments around the world.
