Opened in 2017 by ex-head chef of China Doll, Kid Kyoto is known for its modern take on Japanese cuisine, blending traditional flavors with contemporary twists. The restaurant is designed to offer a unique dining experience that combines an edgy, modern aesthetic with elements inspired by Japanese culture, described by owners as “’90s-Style Japanese Izakaya”.
The design and its cuisine is what gives this venue a trendy and vibrant atmosphere. The decor combines modern elements with traditional Japanese motifs, creating a fusion of old and new. Dark, moody lighting might set the tone for an intimate and relaxed ambiance, showcasing Japanese-themed artwork, murals, or graffiti-style paintings on its walls. with polished concrete and exposed brickwork, it pays hommage to the heritage-listed site, which wondows boast three three-metre-high neon-lit artworks.
“The interior has a raw femininity to it with a punky Nirvana, Radiohead, Björk playlist playing in the background. It was this music that inspired the menu, if you like,” Prout says. "It’s going to be relatively grungy in a kind of izakaya style as they are in Kyoto and Tokyo in Japan.”
The kitchen will be crowned by a large robata grill as a large portion of the menu is cooked over Japanese charcoal and allows diners to see the chefs in action as they prepare dishes with precision and flair.
