The Marsh Study Centre at the University of Otago transforms the former 'Gardies' pub into a vibrant social hub, featuring a thoughtfully designed lower level that serves as a communal living space, while respecting the building's original timber structure.
"There is a distinct attitude toward the importance of the ‘social’ evident in Otago University’s redevelopment of the former infamous 'Gardies' pub. The lower level provides a new living room to campus, complete with hearth, lounges, and leaners. Upstairs the lofty exposed timber structure is respected and retained. A clever insertion of a central plinth defines a collection of smaller spaces within."
