Transforming a Muddy Playground into a Clean and Usable Space. For Nelson Intermediate School, the challenge was turning a muddy playground beneath a canopy of trees into a clean and usable area. The outdoor space, though naturally appealing, was constantly plagued by mud after rain, making it difficult for students to enjoy their breaks. Teachers were fed up with the mess being tracked into classrooms, and the space wasn't being utilized to its full potential.
TigerTurf stepped in to provide a solution that not only preserved the beauty of the area but also created a safer and more enjoyable space for the children. By completing the project in 2020, Nelson Intermediate School now boasts a transformed playground that is no longer a mud pit but a clean and inviting outdoor area for students to play and relax.
The Challenge
The school’s outdoor area, located beneath large trees, was constantly muddy, especially after wet weather, making it difficult for children to play and stay clean. Teachers wanted to use the space for outdoor activities and reading, but the mess being tracked into classrooms became a major issue. The challenge was finding a solution that would eliminate the mud while preserving the trees, as the school was adamant about not disturbing their roots. TigerTurf couldn’t dig as deeply as usual for turf installation, so we had to carefully work around the roots. To overcome this, we installed Geotech fabric to create a stable base that protected the trees while ensuring a functional, clean play area.
The Goal
The school’s main objective was to create a clean, usable space where students could play and teachers could hold outdoor classes, all while preserving the existing trees. It was essential that the solution didn’t interfere with the roots or damage the trees, which were a beloved part of the school grounds.
The Outcome
TigerTurf provided a solution by installing synthetic turf over Geotech fabric, creating a clean, durable, all-weather surface while preserving the tree roots. This allowed the school to eliminate the mud without disturbing the natural environment. The result was a transformed outdoor space where children could play and teachers could hold outdoor classes without worrying about mess. The new turf not only prevented mud from being tracked into classrooms, but also created a versatile area for learning, play, and community gatherings, greatly enhancing the school’s outdoor environment.
