The transformation of O’Connell Street into Auckland’s newest shared space. In September 2014 O'Connell St. was the latest crown of a series of major improvements in the city centre. O’Connell Street was described as a carpark with two tiny pedestrian strips (generously called footpaths) along each side. Even car traffic had a tight squeeze.

O'Connell St. was definitely a challenge with its upright buildings in such a narrow space, yet at street level, it now felt broad and expansive.

The assignment was to capture this shared space with its’ new sense of freedom and convey a friendlier environment for all that use this lane.

About the
Professional

"Light is like music to my eyes."

Vaughan Scott is an award-winning cameraman, accomplished in all genre of the media and a professional photographer. His career spans more than 50 years and has taken him all over the world. With a 37-year television background that started in the black and white era, he has captured significant world events in some of the most challenging locations. His visual storytelling abilities are exceptional and have stood him in good stead operating his own business these past fourteen years.

“As a television cameraman, I travelled to over 50 countries capturing stories of major world events. I have experienced the slums of Kenya, the war-torn streets of Iraq, the devastating aftermath of both 911 and hurricane Katrina. I moved among the mourning crowds paying tribute to Princess Diana, the victorious crowds celebrating Obamas’ Presidential Election and a gun-fueled funeral parade through Gaza city. Life through the viewfinder has trained my eye to capture the perfect frame. What began as a teenage photographer developed into a lifelong passion.”
