Seeking a down-sized city pied-à-terre, the client chose this Prahran apartment for the area’s social vibrancy. Loving good design and never afraid to be bold with briefs that suit themselves, not market norms, they briefed us on
an extensive refurbishment. The site was stripped to its concrete core, with all wall partitions removed, to transform a compact two-by-one into a spacious one-bedder with ensuite.
The replanning also gave back meterage to the home’s living areas and for improved storage. Despite the small footprint, illusory devices in choice and placement of materials work in tandem with the new floorplan to impart the feeling of comfortable space.
The client’s request for robust, easily maintained finishes informed a reductive palette lifted by texture and considerate of permanence and aging. Embracing the inherent character of materials, we and our client look forward to the metals’ natural patinas developing and
the stone finishes wearing over time. Bespoke joinery, fine detailing and complimentary contrasts – like crown-cut oaks and geometric parquetry – are fresh, sympathetic nods to the heritage building’s European design influence.
