On a life style block in an exposed part of Central Otago with a huge surrounding landscape, the built environment needed to open out to the amazing views, but provide the occupants shelter from the fierce weather.

The original dwelling was a small metal clad shed fitted out to cater for a small family, as the family grew so did the metal clad shed. A final design brief called for new living spaces, kitchen, scullery, dining, guest powder room and a master suite sanctuary for the parents.

The use of insulated precast concrete panels anchors the home, while the western red cedar provides warmth to ensure the exterior is still welcoming. The interior uses exposed concrete, white painted gib board and american white oak.

The completed home provides the family with their own individual spaces, five to six bedrooms, along with three living areas to spend time together, playing games, watching movies or entertaining. A large open wood fire is the focal point of the main living space along with a entertainers kitchen with scullery attached. 

A den forms a fuse between the main open plan space and the master bedroom suite and allows members of the family to find a quiet space to relax together that is cosy and less open.

A master bedroom suite opens to the mountain views and sits far removed from the hustle and bustle of the main living spaces. The calm space is welcoming no matter the weather or chaos around it.

The completed dwelling provides the family with individual spaces along with multiple living areas to spend time together and entertain, all the while capturing the views and sheltering them from the weather outside.
