This large character family home is sited in a rural location with beautiful established gardens. The intended proposal covered modifications internally and a rear portico construction. The rearrangement of the main living areas created better flow, family living and access to the garden. The portico enabled shelter and another living area for outdoors along with an outdoor fire enabling all year-round use.

The new kitchen, dining and family areas have been incorporated into the existing internal layout and the original features such as the native matai flooring, timber windows and doors were retained and replicated. Character features such as those found on the original fire surround have been repeated on the joinery panels of the new kitchen island bench to blend the character of the old with the convenience and comfort of the new.

The character of the house was kept and a better flow for modern day living has been achieved.

About the
Professional

It’s a long way from Denmark to New Zealand but Founding Director and Architect Mona Quinn of Callidus Architects has successfully made the leap bringing with her a love of heritage buildings and character homes. Having a Scandinavian heritage and a New Zealand can-do attitude provides a practical approach to design and construction. This love of older buildings and breathing new life into them has created a niche market for Callidus Architects who specialise in alterations and additions to heritage architecture projects. Bringing these buildings up to modern day living and retaining their character and street appeal for these owners is what Callidus Architects are experienced in and enjoy doing.

The team at Callidus Architects, can provide total project services from initial concepts through to construction drawings, administration of the job onsite, landscaping and interior design. We have the experience to create lovable, usable environments while ensuring the on-going use of character and heritage buildings.
