Thoughtfully blending original character with contemporary additions, Salisbury Villa features a central gallery, generous living spaces, and harmonious outdoor connections, creating a family home that respects its heritage while embracing modern living.

Our clients purchased this villa on a large west facing section as a gutted shell with a new concrete slab poured for a garage addition to the street frontage, and a slab at the rear of the villa for additional living spaces. The owners wished to create a family home incorporating the character villa with additions that complimented the original building.

Our plan was to place the bedrooms and utility spaces in the original villa, reinstating the detail and approximate layout of the original home. A long central hall has become a gallery space and a powerful axial link from the front door to the living spaces and gardens to the rear.

The rear addition is treated as a low pitched lean-to form set below the original villa roof forms. However, a half level transition down in floor level results in a generous volume to the addition, complementary to the scale of the rooms within the villa. The low roof lines keep the rear addition hidden from the streetscape and give a simple contemporary form to the home from the garden perspective.

The villa hall has been extended to form a sarked atrium creating a visual axis into the garden. The atrium provides northern light into the kitchen and dining areas and serves to create a sense of three spaces within the large main living area. The main living has a high ceiling and grand double-hung sash windows either side of a large new bricked fireplace. The kitchen and dining room has a lower ceiling flowing into an adjacent library sitting room.

Deep verandahs and sliding doors and shutters connect the living spaces to the garden, providing generous exterior living areas and shade from the harsh western sun. Painted timber cladding, timber joinery and detailing relates the addition to the original home, while also having a modern and distinct character delineating new from old.  The additions reinterpret the vernacular lean-to at the rear of the villa into a beautiful architectural space in harmony with the original home.

“We have been clients of Julian Guthrie for approximately 20 years, within which period of time he has designed both renovations and new homes for us. The briefs have all been very different (including a new home, new beach house, and major renovation). Without exception, the results have all exceeded our expectations. Throughout the foregoing projects, Julian has also played an integral role in the management of planning requirements, and in the case of our home in Herne Bay, that process involved the complexity of obtaining consents to incorporate a character villa with additions that complemented the original home. His advice through that process, in addition to the design undertaken by him, was invaluable. In terms of that design work, we have no reservation in recommending Julian. He is an excellent communicator, and very skilled at translating a brief from a husband and wife (who do no always agree) into an outcome with which we have both been very happy. Our homes are personal to us, but undoubtedly a testament to Julian’s skills. Julian was also retained by my law firm to re-design and refit our offices. The offices are located in a challenging heritage building in the central business district. He had to take on board a number of individuals’ and personalities’ requirements in the brief. The end product, achieved in a very short duration, on budget, is outstanding. His relationship with the contractors on site was very good, all issues being resolved between them, with little input from us as clients in that process. That was of enormous value to us as busy professionals. We therefore have no hesitation in recommending Julian Guthrie and his team.”
