Scots College have recently completed the first two stages of their expansion of student residential boarding. A masterplan was developed with the College that will eventually see the construction of four interlinked buildings.
After 100 years as a private boy’s college, in 2020 the school transitioned into a coeducational school. The expansion coincided with the first female students who had the option of residential boarding. It also freed up space on the college campus for further teaching spaces.
An existing circa 1950’s Housing New Zealand four flat social housing block adjoining the college was recently purchased. Stage one involved the replanning and repurposing of the building into a 23 room boarding house with separate bathrooms, boarding masters flat and the addition of a common room. A new connection to the main college was developed.
The character of the existing building has been maintained and enhanced with the majority of the building being reused. The building was earthquake strengthened to 100% of code.
The second stage more recently completed, is purpose built with 41 rooms, separate bathrooms, social spaces, medical facilities and the boarding office. This building is interconnected to the stage 1 with a courtyard, covered link ways and a sculpture by the schools artist in residence Sam Ducker-Jones.
The new boarding house adjoins the street and provides a separate entrance for the boarding students as well as a new entrance to access the college. The building has been designed to respond to the street and also to integrate with the schools traditional brick heritage and more modern zinc clad buildings.
