Sunset Island Residence

The clients, an active couple with three older children, made it clear that their time is equally spent inside and out. Therefore, we were tasked with creating a series of indoor and outdoor spaces for relaxation, entertaining and exercising. This resulted in a layered sequence of spaces defined by programmatic volumes and curated gardens. The design process for the home was grounded in contrasting narratives. Notions of bay views and sea-level rise, rigid and curvilinear forms, concealing and revealing were all carefully considered. A closer look at the neighborhood reveals that this design exists at scale sensitive to its surroundings, in contrast to nearby homes that appear to tightly pack their respective properties. This residence embraces a forgotten Florida vernacular - the courtyard home - while also paying homage to the Miami Modern Design movement that defined the golden age of the Magic City. Wrapped in a terracotta façade system, soft rounded forms connect the rich architectural history of Miami Beach to this contemporary residence.
